Unfortunately we’ll never have the chance of knowing what he was thinking.
I would have thought yelling a warning is the bare minimum requirement before you kill someone.

Also, these were plain clothes officers - so here’s my breakdown of the situation:

Brazilian guy in Britain, walks out of a building in a thick coat, possibly because Britain is considerably colder than Brazil.
Some guys who are dressed normally run at him with guns drawn, and apparantly don’t shout anything at him.]

What would you do in a foreign city, where you don’t speak the language, when some normally dressed guys suddenly run at you with guns drawn?

Yeah, exactly.

Apparently he spoke excellent English, the police allegedly didn’t declare themselves, according to witnesses.
And he did have wires coming from his coat, but he was an electrician by trade on his way to work.
It’s just a really shit collection of things that brought about the wrong conclusion.

Sounds like a very unfortunate misunderstanding - this was nobody’s fault, except the terrorists.

So how is the news there reporting this ? Are they totally critical of the authorities ? Any polls showing what the people think ? If this happened here, there would be candlelight vigils, marches on D.C., and we would never hear the end of this.

Surprisingly low key, no-one’s really jumped on the Polices back about it, I think they realise the circumstances, and how the incident came about. Having said that, I haven’t seen any of today’s papers. Even Liberty are being pretty reserved about it.

Daily Mail poll stated the following:

A poll on the Mail online on Friday and Saturday showed that 84 per cent of readers were in favour of the shoot-to-kill policy in respect of suspected suicide bombers, compared with 16 per cent against.

But a second poll started on Sunday showed a dramatic swing in opinion. At 10.30am on Monday, only 68 per cent of readers were in favour of the policy, compared with 32 per cent against

After hearing he was an illegal immigrant, dont be suprised if Daily Mail readers approval % of the shoot to kill policy rises again.  The Daily Mail is no fan of illegal immigrants.

You don’t read the Mail do you? Are you ‘Disgruntled WASP from North London’ by any chance. It’s a horrible right wing rag.

It certainly hasn’t changed my view on shoot to kill, obviously this is a terrible incident, and deeply regrettable, but it really is our last line of defence, if we don’t carry on with it, we are going to be exposed at street level. Obviously intelligence and protocol need investigating, but I am not about to join the ranks of the anti shoot to kill brigade, especially given recent events.

Have no fear england...I was checking the online stuff and noticed the Mail Poll.  I never buy the rag.  I continue to support the policy as well.  Congrats by the way on buying Vassell.  That should give you a little help up front.

D’ya reckon?

Instead of cluttering up threads in the main forum, I’ll put a new thread up in the Hangout called ‘Englanders football chat’, that way we can keep all the footie talk in one place. Otherwise the natives will get restless.
I know CM and Night like their football, as do we, Deus is an egg chaser, so he won’t bother, and a couple of the US lads follow as well.

I find the incident highly disturbing.  You’re overdressed for whatever reason.  A bunch of plain-clothes guys with guns yelling at you and chasing you.  What the hell are you going to do?  How do you know they are really police officers?  How do you even have time to think rationally in the situation?

I hope a ‘shoot to kill’ policy requires more evidence of a threat than a coat?  I’m not a big fan of tasers, but this is the sort of situation they would be useful.

Even if hit with a taser a bomber could potentially click the “explode” button.  There was more evidence than threat of a coat, the guy was told to stop and ran from police, then he ran towards a train.  All this within a short time following bombing attacks on trains.

Just keep in mind, if he hadn’t already been breaking the law, he would never have been shot.  I don’t feel bad for him in the least.

I would have run too!  How would you know they were really officers?  I was alway lead to believe that UK police don’t carry guns.

With a taser you lose all motor control, you can’t deliberately detonate a bomb in that state.

Do we have evidence that he was told to stop, given that the tube staff allowed him down the platform ? I’ve only read that witnesses said there were no warnings yelled at all.

Running is sounding more and more like what a guy would do in his position.

LD, I really hope this never happens to a loved one of yours (as remote as it is). Or do you have a policy to not love anyone that would do anything illegal ?

I think the crux of this issue is that the man emerged from a house that was under surveillence for anti-terror intelligence, that was reported initially (god knows if it’s true, there’s so much contradictory evidence flying about), and the police were about to perform a soft arrest when he scarpered.
So, he was in a location that was under scrutiny, he was wearing a heavily padded coat with wires protruding, he ran when confronted. The real issue is how did the police approach him, did they shout ‘armed police stop’, or just ‘stop’. Time will tell.

And why did they leave it until he got on the tube, rather than on a long bus ride, or in between flat & bus, or bus & tube.

What a stupid statement.  My loved ones don’t stay in countries illegally and run from police.

Lucky for them then, as you’d clearly have disowned them otherwise.

What are you even talking about, CM?  Do you know anyone in my family?  Do you have any idea what their backgrounds are?

I can confidently say not one of my family members would stay in a country illegally and run from police.  It’s not about being black and white, it’s about talking about my own family.

I didn’t say family, I said loved ones. You could fall in love with someone not knowing they were an illegal. Or they could become illegal during your relationship. You might even be aware of it.  If that happened, would you instantly fall out of love with them and dismiss them on the day that their visa expired and they were still in the country ?

The coroner stated 7 shots in the head and 1 in the shoulder.  How can they hit his shoulder from such a short distance....as you say the repair job sounds out of the question.  Maybe it was a smal calibre weapon.

Also what is this?....Pakistan insisting our cricketers should go ahead with the tour there....LATERS....sort out the fanatics over there first.  Remember Ian Botham’s rather inflammatory comment about ‘not even sending his own mother-in-law there’...well Ian...I am beginning to see where your coming from mate.  Take the winter off boys with my blessings.
