You keep focusing on the fact that he wasn’t a terrorist and therefor the cops did something wrong.  What if he was a terrorist?  What if all other factors were identical except he was a terrorist.  Then what?  Would you then change your mind?

Well, if all factors in the world suggest that a subject is a terrorist, and hindsight tells us he really was not, then it is simple. The police did WRONG! Chasing terroists is not, or rather should not be, a probability_action_game. In my opinion we just do NOT shoot people five times in the head, just to be safe. We shoot people in the head because we f-king NOW.

But hey, this is just my humble opinion…

Sure, by all accounts it seems as though they shot the wrong guy, but to me the question is whether or not you can realistically blame them. You can’t use information that has come out since the shooting to assign blame to the cops, you have to take the information that was available to them and the orders that they had at the time of the shooting and use that to figure out whether or not they acted appropriately.

If it can be shown that they did not follow procedure or could have realistically taken another course of action, then they should be punished. But if in the end it seems as though they did the best they could with what they were given, followed the rules as they were and made a mistake, you have to chalk it up to a very unfortunate set of circumstances and try to fix anything you can to keep it from happening in the future.... but you can’t really get on the case of the guys who fired the shots.

I think the point LD was making is that we might not be having this conversation if when they killed the guy they found that he was wearing a suicide vest and had his finger on a detonator — even if the cops had the same information available to them when they fired the shots.

Having an expired visa or jumping turnstiles or wearing a long coat shouldn’t be grounds enough.

Were the cops psychic?  Did they know that at that very moment?  Don’t be silly, you are judging this in hindsight based on what you know now (or what you think you know now), not what they knew at that specific moment.

How could they know at that time?  You can’t possibly use hindsight as any sort of excuse.  You have to examine the facts as they were at that specific point in time.

What if they weren’t sure, second guessed themselves, and he blew up a train?  Then what?  Would you be on here defending the cops for not shooting or would you be on their case for not stopping the guy?

When in doubt, kill.  It would be silly not to.

I am not saying that the shooter is to blame. I really do not know enough to state such a claim. However I do believe that someone is to blame. It may be poor individual judgement or it might be poorly given orders. WHAT actually faulted we will hopefully know sooner or later (preferably sooner), but I do not buy that a man even could be shot in the head without the making of mistakes…

I tend to go with ‘poor orders’ myself.  I can totally understand how emotions and adreniline and poorly-defined orders could lead to this.

after what happened there in the last two weeks, fleeing from boobies into a subway was beyond foolish.

The point is that it seems (from what we can tell) that he didn’t know he was running from cops, or security services.

Truth is, we don’t know enough at this point to say if the shooter fucked up or not. I wonder if we will find out.

D’ya think? It’s a toughie, if there’s no action the Guardian goes off on one, if there is action the Mail goes off on on.

I am guessing there’ll be an inquest, and the shooter will be cleared.

But we are speculating on an awful lot here.

We are. Will be interesting to see if we get a fuller picture so that it makes a little more sense.

According to Sky News, that put’s somewhat of a different perspective on it.

Actually, leaving a house under surveillance is a ‘link’ even if he was innocent.

Well, actually it wasn’t a house under surveillance, it was an entire block of apartments.  I think that considerably increases the chances of a false positive.

If my building was being watched, thats about 12 people in 6 different flats. Over half of London is like that.

Just to clarify on an earlier point, he WASN’T working here illegally. He was in on a student visa, and had worked over the allowed number of hours in the past, but for the past couple of years had worked within the correct number of hours. Not that it really relates to his death, but just so everyone knows before they, as Englander said, start blaming him for being here illegally.

Yes, seems to be the case. Clearly some inaccurate reporting there on Sunday and yesterday.
And look what it led to - “oh well, i don’t feel sorry for him at all then” type crap.
