Nuances? It’s pretty straightforward. They throw the ball, and you hit it with your bat and run the bases. Unless it goes foul. Then it counts as a strike, unless you already have 2 strikes, then it’s not a strike.
Of course, should you bunt with 2 strikes and the ball go foul, that’s a strike also.
See? Simple, clear cut, and completely intuitive.
I don’t wish this to sound patronising, because it’s not intended that way, but I went to an all boys school, the sports curriculum was football, rugby and cricket, mixed and all girls schools played rounders, while I am familiar with the concepts of Baseball, when I try and sit down and understand the ‘nuances’ of the game, it confuses me.
Don’t get me wrong, I love US Football and Basketball, so I am not anti-US sports, it’s probably just me being dense, but bat and ball games have never appealed to me, I don’t like cricket either.
I’m aware of the Rounders as girls’ game history. I worked with a wonderful Irish woman when I was younger who loved that the game she loved playing as a lass was so popular and macho here in the States. That’s why I made the testosterone comment. No problems there. :-)
Baseball is excellent, my favourite American sport. I went to a Mets game last time I was in New York. Fantastic.
If you are ever heading back to NYC, let me know. I’ll tell you how to find the local Brooklyn cricket games. But you’ll have to try to explain some of it to me in return.
I can totally appreciate anyone thinking cricket is the dullest thing ever invented.
I don’t mind 1 day limited overs games, they can be exciting, but Test games....they send me to sleep. No urgency to it.
I think that’s it mainly, if you watch other sports, they tend to have time scales, Test matches don’t seem to.
It’s a perfect example of something that unless you grew up playing and watching, it would be very hard to get excited about later in life.

It’s a deal.
He did that whole ‘Mike Piazza is gay’ rumour die out ? Or did he confirm it ?
It was all the rage way back in mid-2002 when I was there. Poor guy.
Met the nicest people at Shea Stadium. They took us ‘under their wing’ when they found out where we were from. Even bought us hotdogs unexpectedly. Awesome. Certainly a place I’d be more than happy to return.

I played Cricket (and Rugby) for my school team, and yet I am a Football fan, and I didn’t play that very much at school at all.
I played cricket, soccer and hockey (field) at school. At one school we had an ex-All Black as principal and he made all five school fields into rugby fields and made all us “girls” walk half an hour to a park to play soccer. Guy was an arse of the highest order. With a name like Eric Boggs he never really did stand a chance of being nice though.

Mike played it exactly right. He simply told a reporter it was a stupid question, had nothing to do with baseball, and was nobody’s business. He ignored any more questions about it, went partying around town and waited for the reporters to get bored. Story died in less than a month.
heh I find the comments about baseball being confusing amusing..... I think baseball is the only sport that I understand. I mean, ok, there are subtleties, but generally speaking it makes a heck of a lot more sense than, say, football (american, that is)
After having people explain the rules to me on several occasions over several years, I think that during the superbowl this year I may have finally, for the first time, had some hint of an idea as to what the heck was going on.....
But baseball, aahh… 3 strikes and youre out.... hit the ball… no one catches it.... run around the bases..... get back to home plate..... get one point.... that I can handle ;)
