THERE’S not too many people in the world who would confuse the one and only Bono U2 frontman, political activist with the late Sonny Bono of Sonny and Cher fame, but one clueless dude in North Dakota managed to do just that last week.
A state government representative offered up a resolution to honor the Irish Bono for his work on combating AIDS and poverty in Africa. Scott Kelsh, who represents the city of Fargo, wanted to salute Bono for his “humanitarian work in urging decision makers and religious leaders to set aside their philosophical differences to ease the burden of those who have the least among us.
“This is something that does matter to us as citizens of North Dakota, the United States, and the world at large,” Kelsh added.
His colleagues, however, weren’t so moved, and they tossed the resolution by a vote
of 58-35. And Representative Gil Herbel’s enlightened contribution to the debate? “When I saw the resolution I was looking for Cher’s name in there,” he offered.
I think that North Dakota is a red state. Leave it to stupid, idiotic, non-critical-thinking rednecks to confuse that moustached corpse with the Most Noble Being on the Planet! Luckily, the author has an idea that will show those uneducated bigots! You go author!

Rock star coming to participate in roundtable discussion

The Iraq war must be ended quickly, President Bush’s proposed budget cuts must be fought tooth and nail, and Oakland should prepare for a visit from international activist rock star Bono, Rep. Barbara Lee said Monday.
Lee, D-Oakland, delivered her third annual State of the District address Monday evening at the Ronald Dellums Federal Building on Clay Street. An early peek at the speech revealed that Lee — long a crusader to halt the spread ofHIV/AIDS in the United States and around the world — is now enlisting some celebrity help.
“If we are to succeed in fighting this disease, we have to raise the profile of the issue and we have to come together as a community,” she said, “which is why I’m proud to announce that this week, musician and international AIDS activist Bono will be joining me in Oakland to learn about HIV/AIDS in the African-American community and to participate in a roundtable discussion with faith leaders on how we can best fight the disease.”
Certainly, the article starts out well enough. I can’t help but question the idea that The Bono(PBUH) needs an education in AIDS in any sort of community. None can equal The Bono’s knowlege of just about anything, especially AIDS involving Africans, whether thay are American or otherwise. As a Progressive who happens to be African-American, I would think that the CongressWomyn would know this. Perhaps she was worried about the damage that the shrubco weather controlling machine caused frosts might have done to California’s watermelon supply. which caused her to misspeak. Luckily, she rebounds with an always deserving rant against *.
“We have to reject the Bush administration’s cynical budget,” she said. “We have to reject the idea that prosperity has to come at someone’s expense, that the government’s only responsibility is to protect business and the wealthy, and the rest will take care of itself.”

I’m starting to think the dearth of really good and noble rock concerts is what causes AIDS.
“Bono was making rounds on the Hill to build support for the ONE campaign. He particularly wanted to meet with Senator Obama since he’s a member of the Foreign Relations Committee – and has been active on international poverty and global health issues,” LaBolt said.
LaBolt said the two did not discuss particular programs or legislation but “had a general discussion about how foreign assistance to the right programs (anti-poverty, global health) can boost our security and the standing of the U.S. around the world.”
If we embrace the The Bono it will boost our standing around the world. Truer words were never spoken.
Should I now vote for Obama to save Africa or for Gore to save the planet or for Hillary to get free healthcare and medical marijuana?
Other winners on Friday night include Presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who won a literary nonfiction Image Award, and Bono, who won a Humanitarian Award called the Chairman’s Award for his work to end poverty in Africa. The Roots even performed “Pride (In the Name of Love”, a U2 classic, to honor Bono. He told the audience “Today the world looks again to the NAACP. We need the community that taught the world about civil rights to teach it about human rights.”

BANJUL, Gambia (CNN)—At the only hospital in the capital of this tiny West African nation, a 3-year-old AIDS patient named Suleiman receives his daily dose of medication—a murky brown concoction of seven herbs and spices served out of a bottle that once contained pancake syrup.
The boy is told a spoonful a day will make him better. His mother, Fatuma, takes the same concoction, as do several dozen other AIDS and HIV patients here. Adults take two spoonfuls.
“It’s amazing,” Fatuma says. “Two weeks ago, I was very ill, weak and couldn’t eat without vomiting.”
This has become the treatment for HIV/AIDS patients here since early January, when Gambian President Yahya Jammeh announced he had discovered a cure for the disease that has wreaked havoc across Africa. He made that announcement in front of a group of foreign diplomats, telling them the treatment was revealed to him by his ancestors in a dream.
Whats not mentioned is that the esteemed President Jammeh listened to “Joshua Tree” before he went to bed that very night. Gotta keep the facts modest and noble.
Gambian Health Minister Tamsim Mbowe, a trained physician with multiple medical degrees, defended the so-called herbal cure.
“I can swear, 100 percent, that this herbal medication His Excellency is using is working. It has the potency to treat and cure patients infected with the HIV-virus,” he told CNN.

According to an MCD mole, the achingly hip Canadian band sent our Bono packing after he requested to meet them after their triumphant set in the Olympia last Tuesday.

“U2 are big fans of Arcade Fire and The Edge attended the first night of their two-night stint in Dublin.”
The blatant snub must have been a blow to Bono, who used Arcade Fire’s song Wake Up as the entrance music for U2’s Vertigo tour and gave the group the support slot for three concerts during the tour.
Arcade Fire also donated their song Lies to promote Bono’s Aids charity campaign, Project Red, last year.
Frontman Win Butler last month criticised the marketing strategies of U2 for “forcing” people to like their music.
“In the UK there’s this kind of rock star competition,” he said. “I don’t know if U2 started it or The Stones or Oasis but a lot of bands think in terms of: ’I’m going to be the biggest band in the world. F**k all those bands who’ve got no ambition’.

The Venezuelan Solidarity Network has taken issue with Pandemic’s Mercenaries 2 and want production stopped, targeting Bono as the one who could ultimately do the deed.
The organisation is collecting signatures of religious leaders for a letter that it plans to send to U2’s lead singer in early April, “to ask him to use his considerable influence to stop the sale of the game”.

U2’s Bono awarded British knighthood

“You have permission to call me anything you want — except sir, all right? Lord of lords, your demigodness, that’ll do,” Bono, 46, told reporters after he was crowned a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in a jokey, informal ceremony in the Dublin home of British Ambassador David Reddaway.
Reddaway paid tribute to Bono’s work as a savvy campaigner against poverty and disease in Africa — but first asked whether he was disappointed that becoming a knight no longer involves a sword or kneeling.
Summit ends with African leaders siding with Mugabe
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (CNN)—Southern African leaders Thursday emerged from a conference in Tanzania’s capital allied with embattled Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and calling for the lifting of all sanctions against his government.
Mugabe, 83, has been Zimbabwe’s only ruler since it achieved independence from Britain 27 years ago.
Under his rule, the once-prosperous country has suffered an economic crisis, with routine shortages of food, electricity and foreign currency. Inflation is estimated to exceed 1,700 percent.
While there is no official figure, unemployment among Zimbabweans is estimated at 80 percent.
In Thursday’s Washington Post, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and South African human rights activist and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu addressed the Zimbabwe issue and called on SADC to “speak out.”
“Given Mugabe’s consistent unwillingness to respect the legitimate complaints of his people, this is not the time for silent diplomacy,” the op-ed, entitled “A Cry for Zimbabwe.”
“This is the time to speak out. It is especially important that members of the African Union and Southern African Development Community (SADC) raise their voices, for they have the most influence and can hardly be accused of interventionism.”
“As the examples of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela remind us, it is never inappropriate to speak on behalf of justice.”

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (AP)—Since 1885, the University of Massachusetts has awarded nearly 2,000 honorary degrees to world leaders, renowned scholars and writers.
Now for the first time, the university is considering taking one back—from Robert Mugabe, president of Zimbabwe.
When Mugabe received an honorary doctorate of law from the UMass-Amherst campus in 1986, he was hailed as a humane revolutionary who ended an oppressive white rule to establish an independent Zimbabwe in 1979. But in the two decades since, Mugabe has been condemned for attacks on dissidents and accused of running a corrupt government that has ruined the economy.
Some UMass students at the Boston campus have circulated a petition asking for the university to revoke Mugabe’s degree, and officials say they’re considering doing so.

The issue also has surfaced at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and Michigan State University, which gave Mugabe honorary degrees in 1984 and 1990, respectively.

“There have been discussions, but I know of no formal process for rescinding the degree,” Denbow said, adding that Michigan State has stopped its study abroad program in Zimbabwe.
Officials at Edinburgh said the issue of Mugabe’s degree was under review.
According to UMass policy, honorary degrees are handed out to people “of great accomplishment and high ethical standards.” Recipients have included Nelson Mandela, former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, author Toni Morrison and comedian and educator Bill Cosby.
Mugabe ‘has become a scourge of Africa’
Once lauded as a model for African democracy, Mugabe has tried to crush opposition to his power and has threatened to expel Western envoys for criticizing his government.
Zimbabwe has the world’s highest inflation rate and suffers from shortages of food, hard currency, gasoline and essential imports. The country’s Roman Catholic bishops said last month that health, education and other public services “have all but disintegrated.”
“Mugabe has become a scourge of his people and a scourge of Africa,” said Michael Thelwell, a professor in the UMass Afro-American studies department. “He has degenerated as a political leader and as a human being.”

Merkel to discuss Africa aid with U2’s Bono

Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel is to discuss aid for Africa with Irish rock singer Bono in Berlin next week, a German government spokesman said Friday.
Tuesday’s meeting at the chancellor’s office comes two months before the G8 summit of the world’s leading industrial nations which Merkel is hosting in the Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm.
Government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said the chancellor and the U2 frontman would discuss “general development issues” and the Africa aspect of the summit during their “informal exchange of ideas.”
The Bono and the Noblest of Nobles(outside of U2 or Africa), the Krauts? Surely the “informal exchange of ideas” is meant only to keep shrubco from getting suspicious. The flow of poetry between the two would be too wondrous for words to describe!

Iconic items belonging to U2 pair THE EDGE and BONO helped fetch $2.4 million yesterday at an auction to benefit musicians who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.
The Edge’s beloved Gibson Les Paul guitar sold for $240,000, while Bono’s sunglasses fetched $20,000 at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe for Music Rising - a charity fund set up by The Edge after the 2005 natural disaster.
Also sold belonging to the pair included The Edge’s 1958 Gibson archtop guitar, which sold for $105,000, and Bono’s autographed Irish Falcon Gretsch Guitar, which went for $180,000. The Edge says, “I have to say that it is a strange feeling to see some of your stuff up here.”
Other musical items sold were Jimi Hendrix’s 1966 Red Fender Mustang guitar, Bill Clinton’s saxophone and a pair of John Lennon’s round sunglasses.
