....
On a list of great guitarists, Steve Vai would need to be in the top 10 somewhere along with Satriani. Their albums are technically amazing but musically good tho.
My favourite player around just now has to be John Frusciante from the Chili Peppers. Mad as a hatter tho.
Thumbs up.

Lastly, Blues mentioned the ABB a couple of years back and on a whim I stopped into a record store on my lunch in the hope of buying “eat a peach” They didn’t have it but they had a best of, hits from 69 to 79. I was blown away.......
Obviously the “experts” over at Q have an EXTREMLY narrow view of music. I could name about ten others nobodies ever heard of, but are sheer genius.
Here’s a few:
Type O Negative - My Girlfriends Girlfriend (Kenny Hickey)
Queensryche - Speak (Chris DeGarmo)
Dredg - Bug Eyes (Gavin Hayes)
Dark Tranquility - Lost To Apathy (Niklas Sundin)
Social Distortion - Dont Take Me For Granted (Mike Ness)
Motley Crue - Home Sweet Home (Mick Mars) Mars is IMHO one of the most under rated heavy metal guitarist of the 80’s hair bands
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell (David Gilmour)
There are tons more, but not a very divverse sampling from Q if you ask me.

If you don’t have it yet, get the original version of “At Filmore East” by the ABB. It’s all anyone needs to know about electric slide guitar.
It seems that Capricorn Records wanted the ABB to call the album “The Kind We Grow In Dixie”. Drummer Butch Trucks, speaking for the band, told Capricorn president Phil Walden “Call this thing “Eat a Peach for Peace”, and it was whittled down to “Eat a Peach”.
If it came out today I’m certain it would just be called “Impeach”.
I was just listening to Santana’s “Europa”. Oh my. I used to be able to play most of it so I thought I’d pull out a guitar and give it another go, and I just listened as I think it’s one of Santana’s most soulful performances on record. I’ve never been a huge “live” Santana fan (which is odd because I love live music), but “Europa” was and still is one of my favorite forays into the possibilities of a Les Paul, Mesa Boogie and an Ibanez Tube Screamer. And the fact that it’s just plain great.
I’ve put this link up before, but maybe some of you missed it. The last electric guitar I bought came from a Canadian company called Eastwood Guitars. They specialize in high quality renditions of old, quirky guitars (think Wandre, Airline, Ampeg, etc.) and the prices are very reasonable. And Mike the owner is one of the best customer service people I’ve ever talked to in my life. Anyway, I opted for the gold metalflake Stormbird (copy of a non-reverse Gibson Firebird), and it’s basically flawless. I bought one of his “floor models” and it’s built as solid as any new Gibson or Fender I’ve played and with shipping I spent a little less than $300. The paint job is perfect, it has quality hardware and best of all, the frets are finished better than some new Gibbos that I’ve played. Check out the cool:
That reminds me. Green Day totally ripped that Terry Kath riff on one of their older songs. They just slowed it down, but the chord progressions and relative timing are identical. I don’t even know the name of the Green Day song, but they stole it from Chicago big time.
I think I know which one you mean… couldn’t name 3 Green Day songs to save my life tho.
In other pop news I read in EW that No Doubt had an album ready - except that Gwen Stefani hadn’t recorded her vocals yet… which reminded me of the Spanglish solo on “Don’t Speak”. Its nigh perfect for the song and its intentions.
While the Roses are legendary (despite very few knowing who they are ;) ), Love Spreads is nowhere near Squire’s best solo. I think the fan favorite - by leaps and bounds above the rest - is the last 4 1/2 minutes of “I am the Resurrection” from their first album.
There’s no question in my mind that Squire is one of the best guitarists - if not THE best - of my generation. Reni is/was an equally talented drummer. It’s really a shame that things didn’t work out differently with that band.
I’ve been out in the garage these last few days listening to some classic rock station - AC DCs 10+ versions of their One Song, wincing everytime over Geddy Lee’s prog rock castrato castigating - WTF- Didacts and Narpets?, and mostly wondering why Clapton is considered such a God when nobody I know really ever whistles, or has ringtones of, any of his hooks - mainly because he doesn’t really have that many, much like Rush. Or the Black Crowes.
1. David Gilmore - Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
2. Brian May - Killer Queen by Queen
3. Jimmy Page - Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin
3. Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix Experience
4. John Squire - Love Spreads by The Stone Roses
5. Eddie Van Halen - Beat It by Michael Jackson
6. Slash - Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns N’ Roses
7. Eric Clapton - While My Guitar Gently Weeps by The Beatles
8. Elliot Randall - Reelin’ In The Years by Steely Dan
9. Matt Bellamy - Knights Of Cydonia by Muse
10. Lindsay Buckingham - Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood MAC
I dunno, I like Lindsay’s “Eyes of the World” much better, heck even pop licks on Concrete Blonde’s “Joey” or Mike Oldfields “duo solo” on “Moonlight Shadow” are more original than some of this crap. Like Eddie Van Halen’s farting in the tub. Oh wait, those are scales he’s playing.
Bah no stevie ray or jeff beck, jesus and no emerson lake and palmer, just kill me get it over with, and jimi was better when he was with the bros ( dont get me wrong I like most of those songs but not as best solo )yeah yard birds not to mention Rush and no Yes

Was that not a 60’s group as well “eat a peach” oh been a while maybe different name but i’m not sure
Yes, Dire Straits. The Rolling Stone List was Guitarists, not Bands.
I think he would be on that list, because he is considered one of the best finger Guitar players in the world.
Theres nothing wrong with “idolizing” a succession of musical notes.
Its when a musician who sticks his cigarette in his guitar’s headstock, then flutters his eyelashes in ego-raptorous seizure to produce a medicore string of them yet prompty gets declared “greater than God” is when and how the true idiot reveals himself.

I’m sure you could write a long book about it. You may have done so already.
I’d like to interview the groupie who was penetrated by yer rock idols with a full, open champange bottle whilst on her period to make us all, you know, so jealous of her. What a cosmic experience. I’m sure that makes her (grand)kids think she’s the coolest ever.
Until then, I guess we’re gonna have to make to with old stories:
I’m always happy when a favorite out-of-print book gets re-issued, but when I read that Pamela Des Barres’ I’m With the Band was being reissued, with new updates from the author and a foreword by Dave Navarro, I felt a strange thrill. A tingling of the spine, a sudden rush, a warming of the skin. Yes, I actually felt a sensual – OK, I’ll admit it—sexual reaction to a book being reissued. But if you’ve read this book, you already know why. You’re probably having the same reaction.
Navarro himself alludes to the effect Des Barres has on her readers. In his sharp and funny introduction, he writes, “What makes Pamela so special and intriguing? I would say her mind. She is fucking brilliant. (As I typed that, I actually felt myself become aroused. That’s how brilliant she is!)”
Does it qualify as prose?
Her prose is as glittery, raw and real as the events and people around her.
