Clearly, the historically oppressed see America through a different lens than I do. So I understand that Wright almost certainly has some beliefs that are weird or crazy to me.

And it’s in some group’s interests to perpetuate that ‘different’* pov…

Wright isn’t historically or currently oppressed.  It seems to me that he’s done quite a bit of exploiting the oppressed himself.  And he’s not going to be oppressed anytime soon:

and Bart’s call for us to understand the ‘real anger’ / mentality sounds a lot like the old story of murder of one’s parents asking for consideration they’re an orphan… since the democrats and liberals help maintain the victim mentality in the black community… now on display… If we replace aids with perpetuating hate… well, plenty of white people are helping to infect them… along with the Wrights…

Wow, Salon found a kook to carry water for the racist…

That aside, I really don’t know what your point is. I could post a bunch of vile nonsense from some paleo con rag without comment… so what? I could also post a bunch of mainstream conservative articles without comment. Again, so what?

Anyway, it’s time for change. No more 60s radicals, black nationalists, et cetera. Feel the change Mr Obama. ;)

Yeah I should have added that I thought it was pretty good.

I don’t care if you understand it or not. I’m certainly not calling for it. I am merely saying that I think I get where that stuff comes from. You think it comes from government programs designed to help them. I think it comes from a history of slavery, racism, jim crow, etc. that was designed to hurt them. I’m not excusing what he said. I’m just saying I think I understand it and it isn’t the big deal being made of it.

I’m saying, if we used debate rules similar to a court, you should recluse yourself… basically… rather than getting involved… because of your ties.

‘Liberals’ perpetuate racial separatism because it’s in their interest on several levels.

For you to try to ‘enlighten’ us on why the racist Wright types think what they think… well.. it runs from laughable to absurd… just on it’s face… but when you get into your motivations for doing so, it gets worse…

I figured… but we have a debate rule about not just linking to articles… and/or if you do just link without highlights, you shouldn’t expect anyone to respond… as you have not made an argument. We can all just link to articles all day… again, so what? Links are not arguments.

The exception is if you link to ‘just share’ something of interest… but again, that’s covered under the ‘don’t expect a debate response as you have not made an argument’…

He didn’t.

But staying in a church in which your pastor screams GOD DAMN AMERICA! from the pulpit disqualifies him forever.

I think the Salon article sums up that attitude pretty well.

I think it comes from a history of slavery, racism, jim crow, etc. that was designed to hurt them.

Hey, Bart! My ancestors were enslaved at such a stupendous rate that the name of the people—Slavs—became the common term for enslaved people—slaves!

You liberals have got to get past the idea that slavery is the invention of white Americans. Slavery has existed since the dawn of time, and is still going on today—espeically in BLACK Africa!

What was unique about WASPs was that they decided slavery was wrong!  It was white Ango-Saxon protestants who first worked and sacrificed to end slavery in their areas—both Europe and America at a time when the rest of the world was very happy with the institution of slavery. Did you know that Saudi Arabia was the last country in the world to outlaw slavery, and that was only around the year 2000 or so. But the Saudis don’t really pay that much attention to that little legal fiction.  They import hundreds of thousands of Philipino maids and laborers each year who are as good as enslaved. They’re just not called slaves any more.

Did you know that Arabs were the biggest traders in black slaves? (Which is why I and many other people wonder why black Americans reject Christianity as the “white man’s” religion, and turn to Islam as the “black man’s” religion.) They were also the largest traders in white slaves, bringing Caucasian commerce in the Mediterranean to a near stop because Christian shops were under constant attack by Muslims—both to steal the cargos and to enslave the white crews.

And, Bart, I bet you imagine that back in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries white men stormed through Africa to catch poor inoccent blacks and enslave them. Never happened. When the Yankee slaver ships showed up at the primary pickup spots, the barracoons were already stuffed to the rafters with blacks. How did they get there? Their own tribal leaders filled the barracoons with their political enemies, war captives and lower caste blacks. And, yes, those tribal leaders knew all about the horrors of the Middle Passage and what awaited the survivors on the other side. They didn’t care!

You want racism, Bart? Try Japan. Japan has the most blatant and openly racist society in the world today. In WWII, the Japanese were ready to sacrifice every Okinawan on the island simply becuase they were Okinawan rather than proper Japanese. Today—yes, the very minute you are reading this—there are enclaves of third and fourth generation Koreans living in Japan—the descendents of enslaved Koreans brought to Japan—who are completely shunned by Japanese society and are not allowed to participate in Japanese civil or cultural life. You’ll never see a Korean running for office in Japan.

Yes, there are still pockets of racism in the States, Bart, and you liberals keep those pockets well stocked with the idea that blacks are incapable of making their way in US society without special handouts and preferences. It’s called the soft bigotry of lowered expectations.  And it is a bigotry that gives a pass to race hustlers like Wright, Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Martin Luther king said he dreamed of the day when his children and grandchildren would be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. Liberals are still judging blacks by the color of their skin, in effect saying that blacks are mentally inferior becuase they cannot make it into college without racial quotas and set-asides, because they cannot secure or hold a good paying job without racial quotas or set-asides.

The most integrated institution in America is the institution you liberals hate the most: the US armed forces. Our armed forces were told by Truman to integrate, and they integrated. There are no secret quotas, no hidden set-asides. The men and women of our armed forces are given equal training no matter the color of their skin, equal opportunities for advancement and equal opportunity for everything else.

The day liberals allow the rest of the country to function the way the armed forces do is the day hate-mongers like Wright will be put out of business.

I can say the same things about much of what Wright has been criticized for saying - . . . .  Chickens coming home to roost (an accepted theory, even you agreed just the other day).
. . . . .
“We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki. And we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye.” Not racist, just an opinion. Nothing outrageous there really.

Yup, these are opinions, they may be Wrights opinions too, but in the 16/Sep/2001 sermon where he made these statements he also told everybody that he was quoting somebody else when he made them.
Who?
Edward Pack, former deputy director of the White House task force on terrorism (under the Reagan administration) and former US diplomat to Baghdad

It was only this weekend when I finally got around to looking up the context of the Wright speeches, up until that point I had no idea he was directly quoting somebody else on the Chickens coming home to roost line (I know many have said it before about this and that, but didn’t know Wright had attributed the quote). I must have watched lots of coverage of this in the left wing media and didn’t see anything about Peck at all. Now that’s interesting.

I think you are wrong.
He is talking about disowning. That is the subject of that sentence. He’s comparing his ability or willingness to disown people that he is close to. He’s not comparing and justifying differing levels of racism, real or perceived. He’s picked two positions on a spectrum.

What was unique about WASPs was that they decided slavery was wrong!  It was white Ango-Saxon protestants who first worked and sacrificed to end slavery in their areas—both Europe and America at a time when the rest of the world was very happy with the institution of slavery.

The Persian Empire was the first civilization to prohibit the systematic enslavement of conquered non-combattant population.

In a controlled society, propaganda is obvious and reluctantly tolerated for fear of the negative consequences. In an open society, the hidden and integrated nature of the propaganda best convinces people that they are not being manipulated.
