Hydrogen is unstable and doesn’t store well. Ethanol has a short shelf life and it raises food prices. You’re right, the US doesn’t have enough refinery capacity for gasoline. As I stated earlier, the best batteries pound for pound have less than 1/25th the power of gasoline.
The most interesting thing that I’ve read lately was some Euros tested a Toyota Prius and a full size diesel BMW for something like 1600 miles. They added 100 miles of city driving to “make it fair for the Prius” and the Beemer still got better fuel mileage. Unbelievable, hyrids still need to be subsidized to compete with the old, rickety diesel engine and they still lose.
I don’t understand why diesel isn’t pushed more in this country. It needs less refining, it’s more efficient and there’s some that say it emits less CO2 than gasoline. Plus we drive long commutes in the US. I just laugh at all of these Prius owners out here in the country who have 30-40 mile commutes. They’d do better getting a diesel car or even a Honda Civic non-hybrid.
