I somehow doubt that ‘you’re sure’. You just think. I doubt though that I could really name any musical group that pretty much all young people enjoy though, because I’m aware of the fact that people have surprisingly diverse tastes. I also don’t think it’s right to see people as living in some bland cultural mediocrity, but then again that’s just me.

I’m going to disagree. I bet there is a 1 or 2 musicians that most 20-something Brits thoroughly enjoy in general.

That’s odd, I managed to spend a whole 2 weeks in Florida without talking to a single person who liked Linkin Park.

As jabba said, I highly doubt you asked every person there about LP.

Incidentally, how does wanting to exterminate South America, the Middle East and Africa fir in with your non-racism?

I never said I wanted to exterminate SA or Africa, I said I don’t see much point in their existence. The ME, however, is nothing but a pit for terrorism.

If Russia was full of terrorists I’d say the same thing.

Oh, and wasn’t it you bitching and whining about ad hominems earlier.

You’ve really got that kettle stuck on your head, haven’t you?

Just keep releasing that homosexual rage, Deus. It’s good for some release isn’t it?

do linkin park fans even venture outside?

This is the fucked up cultural divide. Because of the Brits at this board, I’ve mentioned to many people, “In Britain they consider this music ‘emo’”, to get responses of complete laughter. If LP is emo in Britain, I really have to ask what the fuck you consider The Juliana Theory.

To be fair, Deus called them “pop-emo” first of all. Which, as often happens with Deus when he’s annoyed about something, is meant to be insulting and I bet he’d struggle to support it in a decent argument ;-) It’d be more accurate to describe Linkin Park as manufactured nu-metal wannabees who wouldn’t know charisma or musical talent if it jumped up their arses and lodged itself somewhere in their lower intestines. They certainly don’t qualify as rock, and it’s hardpressed to find any genre for them without putting “pop-” in front of it (which is just a shorter way of saying ‘completely manufactured’).

Bet all you like. I’d be pretty hard-pressed to name them, and I’d imagine I’m slightly more familiar with British people than you.

As jabba said, I highly doubt you asked every person there about LP.

Actually, it was Xetrov who said that.

More to the point, I highly doubt you asked every person in your generation in America about LP, so that’s two of us who’ve made dodgy generalisations. Except that actually I didn’t. You claimed everyone in America your age liked Linkin Park. I said that wasn’t true.

I said I don’t see much point in their existence.

And that’s a whole other kettle of fish. I forgot countries only have the right to exist if they directly contribute something to your existence.

Wasn’t that the British approach to empire building?

The ME, however, is nothing but a pit for terrorism.

I think there are several ME countries that would take issue with that, not least Israel, Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain.

Just keep releasing that homosexual rage, Deus. It’s good for some release isn’t it?

Yes, yes it is. You should try it sometime.

I called them whiny pop-emo bollocks, I believe. The sort of music teenagers listen to because some girl won’t notice them, so they go and buy a hoodie. As a sidenote, I can’t stand emo in general, I really can’t stand carefully targetted marketing bullshit and I really, really can’t stand people who think they can create some whole unique identity for themselves by buying exactly the same music and wearing exactly the same clothes as all the other unconfident losers out there. So therefore I’m definitely going to have no truck with Linkin Park.

Oh, but way to go on creating a whole cultural perception of somewhere based on the four people from that country you’ve talked to.

You claimed everyone in America your age liked Linkin Park. I said that wasn’t true.

That is not what I claimed. I actually first said “everyone I’d met”, and then I went on to generalize that most people in my age group enjoy the music.

Bet all you like. I’d be pretty hard-pressed to name them, and I’d imagine I’m slightly more familiar with British people than you.

Obviously not familiar enough.

You have a big problem misconstruing things. I said they must contribute to global society.

What do Brits consider The Juliana Theory, I really really want to know this. And I’m kinda confused as to how purchasing a hooded sweatshirt (or jumper as you would say, right?) will attract women.

I liked the JayZ-Linkin Park tunes, especially “dust off your shouldersomething” which they played at live8, but on the album “collision course” the tune is quite deceptive.

Get that dirt off your shoulder.

I very much enjoyed the Jay-Z/LP disc as well.

Mike Shinoda’s hiphop group, Fort Minor, has an album coming out November I believe.

Obviously not familiar enough.

What, because I refuse to identify one or two bands that pretty much every young person likes? I’m sorry, I forgot that to be familiar with my compatriots I had to know everything they felt at any one point, as opposed to, oh, I don’t know, having grown up, lived and worked with them. Then again, according to a recent survey the most successful British band ever is Status Quo, so perhaps I’d rather not be familiar with British people.

What do Brits consider The Juliana Theory, I really really want to know this.

Well, I consider their newer stuff pop-rock/American rock. They’re older stuff is a mix of whiny pop-emo and regular whiny emo. In which genre do Americans (or, more precisely, you) consider Envy? Or Taking Back Sunday?

And I’m kinda confused as to how purchasing a hooded sweatshirt (or jumper as you would say, right?) will attract women.

It doesn’t. That’s the point. Most whiny emo kids moan how girls don’t like them and then seem to take further steps to ensure the problem remains a permenant one. Kinda fits in with the self-destructive motivation behind a lot of the bollocks lyrics.

My musical generalization would be that any band whose songs focus on the theme “you don’t know how depressed/lonely/oppressed my life is, woe is me” is bound to be extremely popular among teenagers and suck magnificently at the same time. Prime example = Linkin Park.

Which reminds me: any band that purposefully misspells their name is trying way too hard to be cool.  I give you Stryper.

And the correct answer is Chas, and indeed Dave.

But in answer to your question Soul, no, I don’t think there is a musician or indeed musicians that is universally liked, even our most popular bands, Coldplay, Oasis and various other bands of their ilk have a love ‘em or hate ‘em standing amongst music fans.

I just realised something.

I’m an English major, and I know this is very cocky sounding, but I get high scores on almost all essays I turn in. This was definitely a case of bias, the guy was like having ILa for a prof.

Good for you. Unfortunately, the essay you were badly graded on was one on science rather than literature. One could misconstrue your argument as something along the lines of ‘because I am able to explore the portrayal of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in relation to Baudrillard’s notions of the real and hyperreal, I am therefore adequately qualified to produce a comprehensive paper on drilling in Alaska.’

In other words sunshine, you might be a right star when it comes to literature but that doesn’t automatically make you right when it comes to environmental issues.
