Buffalo Soldiers

This post is dedicated to Cary Randolph, who inspired it.

Today in my English class, a very queer thing occurred. We watched some video documentary of this late 80’s experiment in which two people, a man and a woman, of some sort of Mexican or Native American heritage, were being paraded across the world in a cage as an exhibit. It was, of course, a farce. It was… supposed to be some sort of “satire” or “critique” on the West’s policy of dealing with natives and how they were treated during the colonization period. Now, as a History and Anthropology major, I was relatively upset at this obvious gloss over of the events (ie: white man evil), and it also sent my Injun blood a-boiling… but, that’s not what I’ve come here today to talk to you about.

Now, my English Professor… I really like him. His name is Kirk, and once, when E-mailing him, I sent him:

Kirk… Kirk, you’re still alive, my old friend.

I’ve done far worse than kill you… I’ve hurt you. And I wish to go on… hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me… as you left her. Marooned for all eternity at the center of a dead planet… buried alive…

... buried alive…

And he responded:

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!

So, of course, I’m ready to ‘throw down,’ as it were, upon the first person to curse his name. Understand: he is a great guy, and he is helping me out considerably in my amazingly long “The Civil War was about Slavery” Historical Research Essay, which isn’t even part of his class.

Anyway, in this documentary, there is a scene in which they are in some city with an army or naval base (I don’t remember the uniform), where they show a group of military personnel, lets say, discussing the hair on the woman’s leg (and how there isn’t any), and discussing what they are eating. Now, of course, with the context of knowing that this is all fake, these guys look really dumb anyway. But then the documentary starts joking them with a “hic” subtitles (l’ke dis), and generally passing them off as idiots. Note: Everyone else in that town talked the exact same way, and received absolutely none of this abuse.

So, we have to look at this in context. It’s… let’s say… 1988. The gulf war is a couple of years away, so there’s none of that “military can take you out” attitude of our time, so the “Haha… we were hippies and we hate the military (and whitie)” mentality of the documentary didn’t surprise me. What did surprise me, however, was the discussion in the classroom afterwards. It’s like no one understands documentary tricks (which, by the way, historians have to deal with too). Do 30 seconds in some crappy documentary from 18 years ago condemn our entire military to stupidity? Do the people in my English class not realize that the documentary might have cut out the line “this is fake,” or “they shouldn’t be caging people” from the track? The whole point of the damn thing seemed to be “White people are bad,” so why does an attempt at making the military look stupid surprise anyone?

I guess what I’m going the long way to get to here is this question: Why does everyone seem to think people in the military are stupid? My classmates seem to. Cary seems to. Michael Moore most certainly seems to (though he hides it well from his adoring public). What brought out this culture in us? After I get my Doctorate in History, I’m actually planning on joining the Army as an Intelligence Officer. Does that make me stupid (well… army…)? Did I miss something?

Oh, Post Scriptum: This predominantly white class ALSO went on about the suffering of my people and how horrible it was and how awful they were. Were they alive from 1492-1892 (generally considered the end of the Indian Wars)? No? Then SHUT UP. Certainly did make me feel strange though, having written an essay just one semester ago basically saying that Andrew Jackson basically had no choice and went so far as excusing him from the Reservation and Trail of Tears disaster.

I sure do feel bad for you white people.

This was a very odd first installment; I promise the next one will be better.

"Why does everyone seem to think people in the military are stupid?”

Liberal prejudice.

They’re a click with their own likes and dislikes. Military people tend to be a dislike.

But why? It would seem to me that the Left would love the military, since it provides so many jobs and opportunities to the poor, including but not limited to medical aid, housing, college, ect.

Are you suggesting that the left is hypocritical?

No ninja--you misunderstand. The military is, more or less, a MERITOCRACY. The very thing liberals cannot stand.

I have quite a bit of native American blood in me myself and it always bothers me when other “groups” try to speak for the Native Americans as a whole. Remember when a great majority of democrats started a public outcry against naming teams in relation to Native American tribes? In my mind all I could say was “Who gives a rats ass? They call the give the Fighting Irish a name that is probably more disrespectful and no one complained about that but suddenly people who aren’t even Native American complain about the cheifs or the redskins and what not? Did you know that in a survey taken by thousands of Native Americans on Indian reservations over 75% said they also didn’t give a rats ass and many even cited that it was also honoring givin that a team generally picks a name that incites a feeling of power and skill? DUH! Don’t speak for a minority if you aren’t one.

Mechareaper: My favorite was a documentary on just that subject, with some white woman talking about how horrible it was, and the entire time they keep going back to real Indians who don’t care, and at the end they asked her what she thought about that, and she basically called them stupid, and then they show the Indians again, and they were just dumbstruck.

It was great.

The problem stems from an absolute lack of understanding why anyone would put their life on the line for someone else if there wasn’t something in it for them.  Liberals pay other people to do that for them.  They pay lesser people to do that for them.  They just don’t see any reward in it.  It’s dirty, dangerous, low paying, and hard.  Sure, you might catch a liberal getting their hands dirty at a soup kitchen on the tough side of town, or heading to the congo to help stem the aids crisis.  But those kinds of risks feed into the liberal’s ego.

A liberal cannot feed their ego in the military.  This is because the U.S. military is perceived by the liberal as establishment against the underdog, and their agenda is focused on helping the underdog.  Therefore everyone that is part of the establishment is either evil, or coerced against their will.  I don’t think cognitive dissonance will allow the liberal to believe that most folks in the military are evil, (notwithstanding Noam Chomsky and Ward Churchill) so they have to assume that the majority are either dumb, or forced by circumstance to freely join something that goes against the liberal agenda.

My father was a career Military Officer.  He went to college in the sixties (graduated in 1968) and was on an ROTC scholarship.  He was also a drama major (His joke for 20 years was that it gave him the ability to act like he knew what he was doing; not that any officer really does).  So one day, one of the liberal organizations challenged the ROTC corps to a debate over the war in Vietnam and foreign policy.  The cadet commander looked at it and looked at my dad and said, “You know these hippies, right?  Why don’t you represent us there (My pop was always a pro at debates; kinda a master debater;P).”

So pops shows up about 30 minutes early to the coffee house where the debate was to be held (natch) dressed in his casual attire.  He sat amongst his classmates who were talking all sorts of shit about how they were going to shred this baby-killer and he wouldn’t know what hit him.  Pop just sat there and listened as they ran their mouths, talking about the ROTC corps being cowards and would never show, because they were doomed.  When the clock struck the appointed hour, my pop took the stage and asked, “So what do you want to talk about?”

“Very funny, Tony!  We’re waiting on the coward from ROTC to show!” To which he responded, “I am that coward.  Or did you forget that I am a member of Pershing Rifles and here on an ROTC scholarship?  So, what’s the topic?” The tactic was brilliant.  According to pop, they were so stunned to be reminded that one of “their own” was actually “the enemy” that he was able to easilly flay every argument that they threw at him.  In the end, he says he walked off the stage to dead silence.

I love that story…

Meme convergence…
1) They claim to be anti militaristic..., which is a joke of course, they only are when they don’t run the show…. but they believe it.
2) The US is the world center of imperialism and the military is its tool of power projection.
3) They claim to be propeace… another joke.. As long as a lefty (like Che) is waging war they’re all for it…
4) Patriots are stupid, smart people are either European or internationalists…
5) Only the poor (translation: stupid) go into the military. They can’t admit the stupid thing because they are closet elitists who claim to speak for the poor (translation: people too stupid to run their own affairs)..

I love these people who feel sorry or is angry at white people.

Like diffrence races hasn’t taken slaves or conquered in the past?
Like the asian mongols/huns did not try to take europe when they conquered asia?
Like rich black people did not have slaves under the roman era in northren africa.

The only reason why people can “feel sorry” for white people is that our commanders in time has been superior and our war technolgy and knowledge of our world.
If other races had the same they would have done the same, why did the arab take northren africa/spain in 700-1400?
Why did the ottomanempire take constantionple and made today turkey into a islam country?
Why did the asian mongols/huns invade europe after their own conquest in asia?
Why did japanese people try to take asia and attack USA?
Why did the aztec pillage and slaughter people around themself, untill spaniards(spanish) conquered them?

CAUSE THEY COULD!
Every race or state in history who has been in power and looked down on their neighbours army has invaded them, untill our time.

Indian people can fuck themself, they would have lived on european welfare and government subsidies to help stimulate employment in their fucking country.
Or no wait, you had all been conquered by mexico before that.

Nah, it’s ok. Don’t worry about it.

If we couldn’t deal with a little rabid bias and idiocy directed at us, we’d be in real trouble.

I recently found out that I am a direct descendant of
Robert E. Lee, actually.
Now, if I can handle the scorn and insults and jokes made about that, then I’m sure I can deal with a few screaming tin-foil-hat-wearers saying everything I do is evil, by virtue of my race and nationality.

Screw ‘em.  They’re already becoming dinosaurs. In the long run, history won’t dignify these twits with a footnote.

I think a few of you need your sarcasm meters reajusted.

And perhaps I do too, for some of you… that or some of you really are racist, and I need to lay some smackdown.

Thorisin: That’s nice. I know a lot of Cherokee, they’re good people. I hail from a northern tribe, the Erie. Interesting note about the Civil War, my ancestor at the time fought for the north as part of the Calvery. Still have his sword.

Speaking of native Americans, want to have some real fun with liberals?  Well you know how libs wear any native american heritage, even if they are only.00001% *insert trive here* as a badge of honor (ie Proffessor Churchill)?  Well the next time one of them mentions there heritage as if it makes them super special (only works if they are not 100% Native American), say to them “Well seeing as how you go on and on about how the white man raped and killed indians and such, I guess that makes you a decendant of a rapist who raped and possibly murdered an indian”.  Watch their head explode.

Posted by Don Miguel  on  02/16/2006  at  01:35 PM (Link to this comment | )

Mechareaper is right.  Over the years polls have consistently shown that a large majority of Native Americans have a different view of themselves and things like the names of sports teams than the (white) left and the “mainstream” leaders who are always on the news.  Dr. David A. Yeagley (aka Bad Eagle) has a totally different view than what one usually hears and celebrates the warrior tradition and the contributions of Native Americans to America.

BTW, anyone who knows history (so that leaves out most on the far left) knows that in the U.S. military Native Americans have a long and proud tradition of serving above and beyond what one could expect considering their percentage of the population.

As for military people being stupid, the average level of education of all people in the military exceeds that of their peers not in the military.  And it goes without saying that the level of education of people in the military far exceeds level of education of the Hollywood crowd (of course, to be fair, almost any random group of people exceeds the level of education of the Hollywood crowd).

a tid bit on the Indian/Sports mascot issue.  2 “Indians” have actually played for a professional team with an Indian mascot.  Blair Achtynam and Chris Simon were once Chicago Blackhawks.  They both said they were “honored” to wear the Indian Head on thier jersey. Simon even formed a youth team on his native reservation and called the the “Black Hawks”

Also, read the history of the “Illni” They nearly exterminated the Winnebago tribe and kept many of their woman and children as slaves.  I guess not only “whitey” can be blamed for what happen to the Indians.

Not being Native American (or Indian, either type), I’ll stick to the stupid military people.

Answer: Isolation, otherwise known as the liberal echo chamber. Few liberal elites have been in the military, few have family members in the military. They have little first hand knowledge of soldiers (and the one or two they met are an exception to the rule).

So here’s how it works: war is stupid. Especially Vietnam I and the current Vietnam II. The soldiers are volunteers. They volunteered to fight a stupid war. So they must be stupid.

It’s shades of gray, you see. Nuance and all.

This doesn’t fit your criteria, since they were called the Cleveland Spiders when he played for them, but Louis Francis Sockalexis was THE Cleveland Indian. He played outfield for the Spiders and the Indians were named the Indians as a tribute to him.

Thank you for noticing. I try to point this out every time someone claims that America is an imperialist nation.

We are holding the big stick and have been for a while, yet we’re pretty much the only nation in the history of the world who’s had the chance but hasn’t used it to try and beat the hell out of everyone else and take their land.

Imperialists, my ass.

Byrd,
I did not know that......thanks for the info.
One thing about the Hockey players, is that this was just a few years ago and its never mentioned during the current debates on Indian sports mascots.  It’s not like they were playing in some obscure league (no NHL jokes) in a small city.  This is an original 6 franchise in the 3rd largest city in America and no one picked up on this?  Sadly I am a hopeless fan of this once proud franchise which is why I remember the stories.

Growing up in Southern Oregon, I had a lot of friends in high school who were local natives (Klamath, Willamette,Paiute, etc.) When the whole controversy over sports teams came up I asked one of my best friends, Jack RedBlanket (real name!) what he thought about it.  He laughed his ass off.  He asked me, “Well, do you have a problem with the ‘fighting Irish’ of Notre Dame?” I said no.  He said, “then why would I be offended by teams called the ‘Redskins’ or ‘Indian’?”
I always crack up at these dipshits who tell people they are “part Indian” and when you ask them what tribe they always say “Cherokee”.  That’s when you know they are full of crap.  If they were right, then about 90% of our country’s population (especially in the Democratic states) are of Cherokee blood.
As for the whole “soldiers are stupid” bullshit.  Consider the military academies that provide the majority of the military’s officers.  Consider the number of high school valedictorians and honor roll students who can’t afford college and are able to join the military at higher ranks due to their educational levels.  Consider the members of our military who work in the intelligence, counter-intelligence, space sciences, computer technology, etc. areas.  You think THOSE people are high school dropouts or GED students?
Anyone who says the military is made up of mostly uneducated people had absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

You may not be offended by the fighting Irish, but there were some people over in Ireland who don’t like the name.

You do not have the right to be protected from things that are offensive.  Government does not have the right, responsibility or obligation to provide this protection.

The reason why there is a lot of Cherokee out there is because those that didn’t take the trail integrated into American society.

Interesting fact: The Chief of the Cherokee Indians durring the “Trail of Tears” was 1/8th Indian.

Many people belive that members of the US Millitary are stupid because the only time they hear about what is going on inside the Millitary is when someone does something stupid.

If the average person knew the amount of training, disipline and responseability that went into the makeup of the average soldier, sailer, etc.  They would change their minds.

i have always been very proud of being choctaw, and i have never had a problem with any sports team having an indian name.
