Eubanks is just waiting…
Michael Moore should hope he never meets up with game show host Bob Eubanks in a public bathroom.
“The Newlywed Game” host has had a feud with the “Fahrenheit 9/11” director ever since Moore’s 1989 documentary “Roger and Me” showed him telling an off-color joke: “Why do Jewish women never get AIDS? They only marry a**holes, they don’t screw `em.”
Eubanks claims that he only told the joke because he thought the camera was off, and insists the joke was told to him by a Jewish friend.
While he thought the joke was innocuous, the furor over it cost him a job at CBS and forced him to apologize on “Entertainment Tonight.”
These days, Eubanks claims he is no longer angry at Moore, but he jokes that he would punch the filmmaker if they ever run into each other in a men’s room.
Eubanks discusses his beef with Moore in his forthcoming autobiography, “It’s In The Book, Bob!” (BenBella Books), which will be published in October.
While I’m NOT a fan of Moore using footage shot when the target believes the camera is off, that is just plain sleazy...so was the joke. It’s one thing to drop an off-color, even a blatantly racist joke with someone you KNOW won’t take offense, be they of the minority you are mocking or not. It is quite another thing to say it in a room containing people you don’t know, and who’s ethnicity and level of off-color joke acceptance you don’t know. That’s just being an asshole.
Eubanks is a jerk. Moore is a jerk. If they ever get in a fight, we’re all winners.
