Happy 230th birthday to the United States Marine Corps.  What better way to celebrate than to give to Project Valour IT on behalf of the Corps?  If you don’t know what Project Valour IT is, you can read about them here.

Now that’s a cake!

I would just like to add a hearty “HOO-AH!” and “Happy birthday!” to all the Marines out there.

I gotta say, my safety officer, who returned from Iraq 4 months ago, was looking pretty damned sharp in his dress uniform this morning. (Though civilian life has caused a bit of a.. ummm… snug fit around his middle. heh.

I would like to address the apparent lack, however, of any organized public celebrations for our boys today.
It seems, aside from possibly driving his ass down to Washington, D.C., there’s nothing for his to attend today.
All the parties/celebrations seem to be only private ones.

Don’t these guys deserve a little more? Something possibly organized by the public? A parade, or something?

It just seems a damned shame.

It’s not all ignoring, artmonkey.

Here in NYC, surprisingly, we have a sizeable Veteran’s day parade. In fact my daughter’s JROTC unit is marching in it. There are geographic pockets of awareness and unawareness. Something we should all strive to remedy.

By the way, Valour-IT is a great idea, but this old swabbie is just gonna have to donate on the Navy’s page.

I just got done watching my town’s Parade… I have so much admiration for our veterans and troops

On a different note, the parade as not well announced (i had no idea our city was having one, until i saw a mass of poeple leaving my building.  If the route hadnt gone past my work, i would have missed it.

Okay, this is just disgusting.

Sorry to sour the tone, here, but I just saw something that pissed me off, greatly.

For the record, I live in the Pocono Mountains area of Pennsylvania.
Today, in commemmoration of Veterans’ Day, President Bush will be at the local army depot in Tobyhanna, PA. (About 23 miles from here.)
Searching the local newspaper for events related to this, in an effort to help the marine I work with find something celebratory to attend today, I came across several articles related to the President’s visit.

One, a printing of letters to the president that the paper has been prompting for a week, in expectation of his visit, claims to be “a representative sampling of the responses:”
Yet of the 10 letters printed, only one is supportive of the President, while one is amibuous, four are critical, and four more downright hateful.

Please explain how this is likely to be “a representative sampling” from a county that voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004 with an incredibly wide margin?
Unlikely.

But moreso than this, I could not find, in any of the articles related to the visit, any information about how to attend this presidential visit, or of any rallies, celebrations, or events related to it at all, in any positive, or supportive manner.

What I had no problem finding, however, was this;

Members of Pocono Progressives plan to rally outside Tobyhanna Army Depot as President Bush visits there today.

The group will line Route 611 before the turn onto Midway Road, which leads to one of the depot’s entrances.

They plan to dress in black in honor of Americans and Iraqis who have died in the war, and to carry placards bearing the names of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.

Anyone wishing to carpool to the event should meet at Xxxxxx-Xxxx near Xxxxxx Xxxx by 8:15 a.m.

The group will travel to a public parking area a half-mile from the Tobyhanna train station and be shuttled to Route 611.

For information, call (570) XXX-XXXX.
(Number and location removed by Artmonkey)

They apparently had no qualms about not only advertising this event, but in advocating it by giving the contact and meeting info. (An effort in which I will have no helping hand for them.)

while one is amibuous,

Make that “ambiguous”.  Sorry.
(Never type while you’re incredibly angry.)

They are protesting the same war that these soldier fought with their lives in… and then used these dead soliders to advance their protests, while being able to ‘honor’ these soldiers at the same time.

Did i get that right?

Why does this even come as a shock?  They have been using the dead troops they allegedly support to not support our troops.  Kirk could have used logic like this to destroy that long lost probe in that Star Trek episode…

Are we talking about Veteran’s Day or the Marine Corps Birthday? When I was in the Marine Corps, the Birthday Ball was usually a company function. The public normally doesn’t get invited to participate. It’s kind of a leatherneck thing.

One year, our unit did a recreation of the Iwo Jima memorial. I volunteered to play the Navy guy, because my dad was in the Navy. Anyway, we dressed up in authentic period uniforms, grabbed this big metal pipe with a flag attached to it, and ran out into the middle of the room, where we froze in the position of the guys in the famous picture. We held that pose for about 10 minutes, while everyone walked around us taking pictures. I think that was the coolest thing I ever did at a birthday ball.

Anyway, Happy Birthday to all Marines, and a hearty thank you to all the unfortunate souls who joined one of the other branches of service! As a former Marine and as an American, I salute you all.

The coolest Marine Corps bumper sticker ever:

Yes, Marines are part of the department of the Navy…

We’re the Men’s Department.

I always thought USMC stood for either U Suckers Missed Christmas or Uncle Sam’s Miguided Children. There’s another one, but this is a family show.

I acutally like geting jabs from other service members.  Notice that they are never really mean or degrading , but all in good fun.  It adds to the joy of serving.  As a former Marine, I think I’ve heard them all.  We always depended on each other and always will.  Thanks to all of you.

To be a Marine is to live forever.  Semper Fi

It’s got to be Michael Moore’s fault. He’s in league with Halliburton and the evil Bush Cabal. They’re trying to force people away from the internet so they can feed fast food to terrorist prisoners and kill them with diabetes and other weight-related illnesses. Seriously, man, you don’t want to cross these people.

lets never forget why they got maimed in the first place.

They helped to liberate 28 million Iraqis from one of the most brutally repressive, murderous dictatorships in history. I agree with you, we should never forget that. And your point is?

Its amazing how the left rationalizes with themselves that the Iraq war is not real and hasnt done anything positive, despite all the positive news.  As long Bush did it, its bad…

Posted by Belcatar  on  11/21/2005  at  01:00 PM (Link to this comment | )

I watched that video of Bush at that press conference...I don’t like Bush, didn’t vote for him, but all the same, I thought the guy handled the situation pretty well. At least he had a sense of humor about it.

Put Troll-Boy on a plane and send him to a foreign land where he has to deal with language barriers, unfamiliar surroundings, and jet lag, and see if he can be absolutely perfect. I doubt he could.

Still can’t come up with a viable exit strategy, eh George?

Yeah… that’s funny.  Almost as funny as a V.P. gettling lost in his own “back yard” (As Gore commonly referred to West Virginia.)

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer
Reported Nov. 10, 1992:

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.VA.—The environmental vice president-elect lost touch with his environment during a weekend trip.

Al Gore and his wife, Tipper Gore, were hiking Saturday at Coolfont Resort, in woods about 50 miles northwest of Washington.

“It’s a wilderness atmosphere here and they actually got lost,” said Sam Ashelman, co-owner of the 1,500-acre resort. “It got dark Saturday afternoon and they were out hiking, so they had to use Secret Service ... to find their way back down again.” The two were never in danger and they were helped down the trail by agents, Ashelman said yesterday.

But still, getting confused on foreign soil is embarassing.
Of course… not quite as embarassing as getting confused on your own soil.

Im referring to the first story, specifically. The rest is just gravy.

Oh, and Tonys,

Buzz was right. A mindless, hateful troll was apparently just what we needed… and you came through brilliantly on that front.

Thanks. You’re a real pal.

What’s so terrible about getting lost in the woods? I don’t like Al Gore either, but I wouldn’t hold it against somebody for getting lost while on a hike. I got lost in my backyard last winter. (I live on 82 acres) It took me a few hours to figure out how to get back.

Wait, this is supposed to be about the Marines. Once, when I was on a training exercise in Jacksonville, Florida, a whole bunch of us got lost. The funny thing was, it was a land navigation exercise. We eventually gave and found a major highway, where we were picked up by our company’s safety vehicle.

One group didn’t make it back until dark.

Well, there was that one time, but that doesn’t count,
I guess.

Apparently the unorganised insurgents are far more capable of taking over Iraq than the Iraqi army we’ve been training now for a couple of years a god knows what cost. Can we all say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Obviously you dont pay attention to history.

What kind of President decided to invade a country without asking their Secretary of State AND their Secretary of Defense FIRST? The Worst President Ever.

Probably the kind that had the legal ‘go ahead’ from Congress.

Of course what else could you expect from the paper pushing idiot son of a failed politician. A drunken trust fund baby that never had a REAL job or EVER provided ANYTHING MEANINGFUL to society in the way of HONEST WORK

Someone needs their meds.

On a side note.. here are some other famous lines from Bush’s ‘MIssion Accomplished’ Speech:

“The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September 11, 2001, and still goes on.”

We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We’re bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous.

The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done and then we will leave and we will leave behind a free Iraq.

major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.

And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country.

The war on terror is not over, yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide.

This is probably a good time to point out that there is a difference between the war in Iraq and the War on Terror.  (The war in Iraq is a division of the war on Terror, Which contains several ‘Operations’, the main Operatin being ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’ but people like you conveniently forget).

In reference to Operatoin Iraqi Freedom, President bush said:

Our victory will mean the end of a tyrant who rules by fear and torture

HEY!!!  I must INSIST that you leave the Kennedy family out of this!!!

Kennedy? I thought he was talking about Kerry…

...or maybe Clinton… (If running a baseball team, or two major Corporations isn’t a “real job”, then I doubt being a bottom-feeding lawyer would be considered one.)

...or perhaps Charlie Rangel?

...or Al Gore?

...or 99% of the democratic congress or senate, who’ve never had any employment outside of politics?

...or maybe it’s just projection, alltogether. Perhaps Tonys is just making a desperate plea for help as he attacks those facets of his own life he resents, while crying from his cot in mom’s basement?

Ah, trolls… gotta love ‘em.

Posted by artmonkey  on  11/22/2005  at  07:14 PM (Link to this comment | )

For the record… according to the latest polls,
while the President’s approval numbers are low, they are still higher than the republican congress’, whose numbers are even higher still than the democratic congress’, whose are at an historically all time low.

So everyone’s polls are low, across the board… given that, the Prez is still king of the hill, numbers wise.

Just something to ruin your holiday.

You’re welcome.
