One Moore Thought
From the Oscar disqualification story below.
Variety speculated that backers of the film might regard the movie, which has been popular among Hollywood’s liberal-leaning elite, as having a better chance of clinching a nomination in the best picture race if it was disqualified from the documentary contest.
Now, I don’t for a second think that the Weinsteins are stupid enough to have given the film to Castro, knowing full well that it was against the rules of the doeumentary category. I also don’t think for a second that Castro pirated the film, because if he did we would have heard something about it once the broadcast was announced. The only plausible explanation, therefore, is the one postulated above by Variety, that Moore, the Weinsteins, and LGF intentionally gave the film to Castro, knowing that it would be disqualified for Best Documentary, in the hopes of getting it nominated and winning Best Picture.
It makes sense. When a prosecutor is trying a case, often times they will opt against filing multiple charges of differing degrees (Murder 1, Murder 2, Manslaughter 1, etc.) because the jury might be inclined to give a lesser sentence. By going all-or-nothing they stand a better chance of getting the verdict they want. Well, this is virtually the same dynamic. Hollywood liberals are going to want to fete this film to high Heaven. It’s a shoo-in for Best Documentary, and Moore won one of those two years ago. So, rather than accept another Best Documentary award, the FAG group is rolling the dice to force the hand of the voting Academy members. Rather than give them the lesser option of Best Documentary, FAG is going to make the Academy choose between best picture or nothing at all. And when you have a group of people as pro-Moore and anti-Bush as the Hollywood left is, do you think for a second they’re going to let F9/11 slip out the door without a statue of some kind?
Not on your life.
