Will Film For Food
Mikey is desperate. This just appeared in my mailbox, it’s from his mailing list.
Of course, if you live in Lincoln, NE; Bangor, ME; Reno, NV; New Haven, CT; Columbia, SC; or Oklahoma City, you didn’t get to see “Sicko” this weekend either. But thanks to the massive turnout in the 440 theaters who had it, the studio has decided to expand “Sicko,” TODAY (Tuesday, July 3) to 200 more theaters! And this Friday, they will add another 100 cities. Those of you who went to see it in the last few days have made it possible for others around the country to see my movie. Thank you.
So this will become the make-it-or-break-it week for “Sicko.” Will you help me? Here’s something you can do right now. Go to your address book icon on your computer and send a brief note to all your friends and associates about why they should see “Sicko.” Then organize a group of your friends to go see “Sicko” some night this week. I promise you that you won’t be disappointed. After all, what’s the worst that could happen—a pardon or a commutation from the President of the United States?
Typical socialist, begging for other people’s money. Since Moore has stated explicitly that he has no problem with his films being pirated and redistributed, why not just stay at home and view one of the fine leaked DVD rips that are floating around the internet? You and your liberal friends don’t need to go engage in icky poo-poo heartless capitalism to see Moore’s message, you can live the socialist dream and benefit freely by stealing the work of others. Now THAT is something Mikey should appreciate.

This begs the question: is this the benevolent, for-the-common-man Moore just trying to spread the word about the evil capitalist health care system… or is this the real Moore, capitalizing off the backs of his common-man supporters because he’s getting 50% of every hard-earned dollar they plunk down in the theater?
That aside, you make an excellent point Lee: for all the anti-capitalist sentiment of Moore’s, it’s still all about the benjamins, isn’t it?
I am reminded of something I read YEARS ago in Rolling Stone about Kurt Cobain (back when Cobain was still alive). It was something to the effect of, “Kurt hates being famous, hates being a rock star, hates all that stuff. But he really likes making millions and millions of dollars.”
That’s how I’ve always viewed Michael Moore. He’s always wanted to be a revolutionary, but he likes making millions and millions of dollars.

Gotta be fair here - We do this sometimes. We’re not socialists. We’re whores. :)

The distinction, of course, is that (a) we freely admit we’re whores, and (b) we provide a free service and ask for voluntary donations from readers who would like to see that service continue. Moore is working solely for his own enrichment and aggrandizement.

100% true. I just wanted to call us whores. It makes me feel...sexy. Like Mike said Hillary was.
Sexy.
Of course, you’ll get those who will argue that Moore is ‘providing a service’, as well.
...They’d be completely wrong, of course, but they’ll argue it anyway.
But you know what? It doesn’t matter.
Even if the situations were completely the same, and Jim was doing exactly the same thing Moore is doing… it still wouldn’t matter.
Why, you ask...?
Because while Jim is a proud capitalist pig, who reveres the evil, mind-corrupting, world-destroying, baby-eating system of a free market, Moore is a proponent of the enlightened, peace-giving, wound-healing, love-bringing socialist ideology.
So Jim would only be practicing what he preaches,
while Moore is betraying the very spirit of what he vilifies others for not aspiring to.
wait wait wait.... Michael Moore? A hypocrite???
Say it ain’t so, Joe! Say it ain’t so!

Or you just started from a false assumption. Socialists don’t beg for money, they take it via force. The level of force used is only related to how much power they have in a given situation. In some situations, it’s a bullet to a brain or trip to a slave labor reeducation camp… in others; it’s more civil (tax collector)…
Sounds like a typical captialist to me. I frequently see advertisements from businesses “begging for other people’s money”. Michael probably put a lot of time, effort, and, of course, money into making Sicko. So he has to make a profit.
So he has to make a profit.
But...but...but...profits are bad, aren’t they? I mean, why would a doctor or an insurance company or a hospital want to make a profit?
Doesn’t profit=evil?
I’m so confused.

Can’t argue with that.

But if you put a lot of time, effort and money into something like SAVING PEOPLE’S LIVES, then of course you have a social obligation NOT to make a profit.
Got it.

Actually I think “Astroturfing” might be more accurate. :)
Socialists don’t beg for money, they take it via force.
Along this note, I just read an opinion piece from John Stossel, after he interviewed Moore. WARNING TO MOORE SUPPORTERS: LIBERTARIAN THOUGHTS DIRECTLY AHEAD! ;)
“But government is force,” I said to him. He was incredulous.
Michael Moore: Why do you see it as force?
Me: Because government takes money with force from people and gives it to others.
Moore: No, it doesn’t, actually. The government is of, by, and for the people. The people elect the government, and the people determine whether or not they’ll allow the government to collect taxes from them.
Is it really necessary to explain that government is force? When the Salvation Army asks you for a donation, you are free to say no, and you suffer no consequences. When the U.S. government demands a tax return and a check on April 15, you can’t say no and go about your business. You comply or face fines or imprisonment. Yes, you get to vote for candidates periodically. But having an infinitesimal say in who will coerce you doesn’t change that fact that they are using force.
Therein lies one of the key differences between liberals and conservatives. Or libertarians and everyone else. ;)
Yeah, people like Moore use propaganda to try to get enough people togeather to take things by force from everyone else....
Since Moore has stated explicitly that he has no problem with his films being pirated and redistributed, why not just stay at home and view one of the fine leaked DVD rips that are floating around the internet?
Quick questions, does Moore own the distribution rights to “Sicko”?
Side Note: Actually, given that Moore said that he has no problem with file-sharing, I wonder if that would legally constitute permission on his part--and thus make file-sharing his stuff legal.
That aside, you make an excellent point Lee: for all the anti-capitalist sentiment of Moore’s, it’s still all about the benjamins, isn’t it?
