Call to action

Posted by JimK on 07/28/05 at 12:29 PM

Ok folks, this is what we do.  Here’s the skinny:

The Blob is in town with his “non-political” film festival, and the local
liberal paper is having love-spasms. I volunteered to work as a “security”
person at Genie Aldrich’s counter-festival which is showing “Michael Moore
Hates America” on Friday night. I am looking for quotes from the Blob that I
can print and hand out to the lefties. I remember him calling Americans
“stupid” in the foreign press, but I can’t find it. Can you help me locate
some telling quotes? I’d like to put this together today, if possible.

Thanks,

Daniel Sanderson

You know what to do.  Find the choice stuff, in context with citation as to source, and drop it in the comments.  I’ll point Daniel to this thread.  Let’s roll.  ;)

Not quite fire with fire, but it’s a free country

Posted by JimK on 07/08/05 at 08:41 PM

Interesting.

A film festival being organized by left-wing director Michael Moore has some right-wing competition.

A local activist and a conservative group from Texas said Wednesday they were putting together an alternative to the Traverse City Film Festival, which Moore and residents of this Lake Michigan community are organizing.

“People are fed up and tired with the extreme left-wing radical fringe — America haters, family haters, Christian haters,” said Genie Aldrich, a resident of nearby Suttons Bay and founder of the Traverse Bay Freedom Film Festival. She tried unsuccessfully last month to dissuade the city commission from letting Moore’s group show films in a municipal waterfront park.

“I like it when Republicans take ideas of mine,” said Moore, a Flint, Mich. native who has residences in neighboring Antrim County and New York City. “I have a few more where those came from, if they’d like to sit down and talk.”

Smarmy prick.

The punchline?

“These are highly acclaimed films,” Moore said. “Theirs are works of political propaganda.”

I almost peed myself laughing.

Moore roundup, Patriot’s Journey, OT

Posted by JimK on 06/13/05 at 05:18 PM

I know I have been slacking off on the Patriot’s Journey posts.  I’ll do better.  In the meantime, the second-to-last item in this roundup counts for today.  :)

OK, here’s a few interesting tidbits…

- First up, sent in by about a half-ton of people, a good, comprehensive review of Jesse Larner’s new book ”Moore and Us: One Man’s Quest for a New World Order.”

I wasn’t expecting an awful lot from Larner’s book, since his politics are so far to the Left. As you’ll see from the Q&A below, he hates George W. Bush almost as much as Moore does, and this leads him into some laboured rants against the forces of darkness. But to his credit, he refuses to ignore uncomfortable facts about the Left’s favourite all-round polemicist. His verdict is detailed and damning. Moore’s admirers have long had a habit of shrugging off attacks as the work of the grand right-wing conspiracy. It won’t be so easy this time.

I ordered a copy, but it seems to be UK only, so who knows how long it will take to arrive.  I’ll post a review as soon as I have finished it though.  In the mean time, that lnk to the book takes you to Amazon.co.uk, and we don’t get a cut if you buy it, the reviewer I linked does.

- Next up, sent in by many of you as well, Mikey is helping with a film festival.

Michael Moore is helping develop a yearly film festival for this northern Michigan tourist town that will include free outdoor showings of all-time favorites on a large waterfront screen.

Among the classics being considered: “Jaws,” “Rebel Without a Cause,” and “Casablanca.” But no “Fahrenheit 9/11.”

The Traverse City Film Festival Committee, with Moore as chairman, received permission from city commissioners Monday to use a municipal park adjacent to Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay for the outdoor viewings during the inaugural festival, scheduled for July 28-31.

The park, known as the Open Space, also is the primary setting for the National Cherry Festival in early July. The films will be shown on a 49-foot-by 24-foot inflatable screen.

So far so good.  If Moore keeps his word, and we all know how valuable his word is, then I commend him for this.  I ain’t the only one doubting Mikey’s word, however…

Some people at the meeting weren’t convinced.

“You’re going to be driving past it and you’re going to be watching political propaganda,” Mary Ann Galic said.

Local citizens should decide what films are shown on public property, said Genie Aldrich, another Traverse City resident.

“This is not Podunk USA and we do not need outsiders coming in here telling what is good for us,” Aldrich said.

It’s amazing how little trust Moore’s fellow Michigan residents have in him.  Oh wait...he’s not a resident of Michigan.  Hey, that would explain the “outsiders” reference from Aldrich.  :)

- Next...did anyone else notice Moore made the nominee list for the Discovery Channel’s “Greatest American” thing?  WTF?  By what stretch of the imagination does a lying, opportunistic pile of human fecal waste like Moore deserve to be on a list with George Washington?  WHo made that stupid list?  Luckily he went nowhere in the voting.  I’m slightly appalled as some of those who made it in to the top 25 though.  Dubya?  a “Greatest?” No, sorry.  Oprah?  Billy Graham?  Fucking Bill Clinton?  On what planet are these people examples of our “greatest” Americans?

But that’s the beauty of America, folks.  You’re free to make up dumb polls and just as free to vote stupidly in them without fear that the police will come and take you away if you don’t vote for Glorious Leader.

- Lastly, my new podcast is up.  Nothing at all to do with Moore, but damn fine entertainment anyway. :)

DVD on Michael Moore visit to be released

Posted by JimK on 06/07/05 at 05:35 AM

Interesting.

A documentary tracking the controversy generated by filmmaker Michael Moore’s visit to Utah Valley State will be released on DVD this summer. ‘’This Divided State’’ will be available in Utah this August, and released nationwide in September, said the filmmaker, Steve Greenstreet.

Greenstreet documented the battle over Moore’s invitation and the use of student funds to cover his $40,000 speaking fee for a visit just before the November presidential election. It eventually spurred an invitation to conservative broadcaster Sean Hannity to also speak at UVSC to provide political balance.

As the controversy heated up, Greenstreet formed a production company, Minority Films, and produced the film.

Sounds like it could be something worth seeing.

Lawyers: sic balls

Posted by JimK on 05/05/05 at 11:53 PM

With apologies to Stephen King for the title

I’m of two minds on this story...I think they are both equally valid.

An attorney for filmmaker Michael Moore say the brother of Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols should be prosecuted for tax evasion.

In a deposition given in connection with his libel and defamation lawsuit against Moore, James Nichols said he doesn’t file federal income tax returns, despite working as a farmer.

In a court filing, Moore lawyer Herschel Fink said he wants U.S. District Judge Paul Borman to “inform the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Nichols’ admitted, continuing tax evasion.”

According to the deposition filed recently in U.S. District Court, Nichols told Moore’s lawyers, “I’m not required to file.”

I’d be interested to knwo why Nichols thinks he doesn’t have to file.  If he’s one of those “taxes are illegal” nutters, well...good luck with that.

Anyway, the two minds thing.  One part of me says “Moore is right, however petty his motivations are.  The guy isn’t paying taxes, he’s admitted to a federal crime.  SO be it, way it goes.” The other part says “This is how Moore protects the little guy against big bad government?  By turning him in?  Some man of the people, eh?”

If Mikey wants to set himself up as the champion of the little guy, he oughtta start acting the part.  Simply claiming you are something doesn’t make it so.

On the other hand, Nichols is intentionally evading taxes and has openly admitted it, so to hell with him.  Besides, on a purely personal level, he creeps me out and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to learn he’s the third party complicit in the OKC bombing.  But that has no legal relevance to his tax evasion.  It would just be a bonus if he ends up copping a plea and admitting to playing a part in OKC in order to get a lighter sentence.  AT least we’d know.

So...what do you think?  Is Moore doing the right thing or being petulant, or both?

Thanks to reader Jake for the link.

Giving A Little Back

Posted by Lee on 04/22/05 at 03:38 AM

Here’s a follow up to my post from yesterday about Mikey’s astonishing $5,000 scholarship fund.  I wrote:

Yes, my friends.  Michael Moore is ponying up five whole grand for the cause of “free speech.” The truly ironic thing is that this is roughly 1/6 of what he would have earned from the speaking engagement had it been allowed to take place.

Just in case anyone out there was doubting my math, here are the numbers.

(University vice president for student affairs Francine) Martinez said Moore’s $25,000 speaking fee and $12,000 security and travel accommodations would have come from a combination of funds, from the university, from student-paid campus fees and $6,500 that student government leaders voted 12-3 to spend.

Okay, for one night’s “work” Michael Moore was going to rake in almost $40,000.  According to Mike’s website the Slacker Uprising Tour was going to visit 60 cities.  Now, making the very logical assumption that Mike’s speaking fees were similar at every event, he made $2,400,000.  Not a bad haul, huh?  Especially considering that this is coming entirely from student and/or school fees of one kind or another.  Making a small stipend for your time and trouble is one thing.  Making this much profit from students is another entirely, especially in light of the fact that he ponied up a pissy $5,000 for a four-year scholarship.

Giving Back to the Dumbest People

Posted by Lee on 04/20/05 at 06:58 PM

Multimillionaire leftist Michael Moore, who thinks that Americans are “the dumbest people on the planet,” is taking some of the $100 million he earned from F9/11, and the $30,000 a speech he earned during his Slacker Uprising Tour, and donating to the cause of higher education.

Maverick film-maker Michael Moore on Wednesday announced a “freedom of speech” scholarship for students at a Southern California university who defy the administration and stand up for student rights.

Moore, whose popular documentary “Fahrenheit 9/11” helped polarize America in the run-up to the 2004 U.S. presidential elections, established the $2,500 award for students attending California State University San Marcos.

Moore was barred from an October 2004 speaking engagement at the university, about 35 miles north of San Diego, because there was not enough time to arrange for a speaker from the opposite side of the political spectrum.

Students responded by organizing their own protest and holding a 10,000-strong rally and concert at an off-campus venue where folk singer Joan Baez performed and Moore gave a speech.

The scholarship will be awarded to two students, for a minimum of four years, who have done the most to fight for issues of student rights by standing up to the Cal State San Marcos administration, Moore said.

“I hope this scholarship will encourage students to show courage and stand up for what they believe in,” Moore said in a statement. “The university should not be a place for fear, but a place for bravery, free thought, and a little bit of rebellion.”

Yes, my friends.  Michael Moore is ponying up five whole grand for the cause of “free speech.” The truly ironic thing is that this is roughly 1/6 of what he would have earned from the speaking engagement had it been allowed to take place.

Keep giving him your money, lefties.  Someone has to bankroll his filthy, capitalist, corporate lifestyle.  It might as well be you.

The $50 million dollar man?

Posted by JimK on 02/20/05 at 12:29 AM

The math sounds right, but I have this instinctual distrust of anything from Newsmax.  And I know the quotes from Urbanski are at least accurate...Moore’s ex-manager despises him and has been telling poeple Moore’s all about the money for years.  That, coupled with the fact that Newsmax seems to be reporting Vanity Fair’s piece and not original reporting leads to me give this article the benefit of the doubt until I can read the VF piece for myself.

Anyone out there subscribe to Vanity Fair?  I’d hate to buy a copy just because Mikey was in it...that smacks of financially supporting his ridiculousness.  ;)
