Sanjay Gupta, Superstar
You remember Sanjay Gupta? He was CNN’s medical correspondent for a long time. When he had the temerity to disagree with Michael Moore, he was pilloried by the Moore-ons and Moore apologists like PZ Myers. They could not believe that a member of the MSM would dispute the vileness of America’s healthcare system. We blogged on the Moore-Gupta dust-up here, here, here and here. For disputing Moore, Gupta was called a tool of the system. This quote, from revere, is typical:
Gupta was badly roughed up and had he any testicles prior to the interview would have found them gone after it. Given his track record, he actually had nothing to lose. I’m not a violent or blood thirsty kind of person, but even I have to admit it can be entertaining to watch someone beat up in public.
One can disagree with Gupta, although the links above document, very throughly, that Gupta was right and Moore was wrong. But the personal attacks and slagging of Gupta was typical of the Cult of Personality that has built up around our favorite documentary film-maker. And no doubt they played some role in his decision to withdraw his name as a nominee for Surgeon General (to be fair, many liberals loudly supported his nomination).
Ignored in the fracas and character assassination was that Gupta is a skilled neurosurgeon who has saved and improved lives. While covering the Iraq War, he rolled up his sleeves and operated on both military and civilian casualties.
He’s done it again:
After doctors and nurses from a Belgian medical team left a field hospital Friday night because of security concerns, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent, was the only doctor to help 25 earthquake victims, CNN said Saturday.
The network said Belgian Chief Coordinator Geert Gijs, a doctor who was at the hospital with 60 Belgian medical personnel, told CNN that he decided to pull the team out for the night.
Gupta stayed all night at the hospital with other CNN staffers, security personnel and at least one Haitian nurse who had refused to leave, CNN said.
“I’ve never been in a situation like this. This is quite ridiculous,” Gupta said. He monitored patients’ vital signs, gave them pain-killers, continued intravenous drips and stabilized three new patients in critical condition, CNN reported.
This, my friends, is making a difference.
Comments
Uptade 2: Moore announced that Cuba has sent 300 doctors to help out in Haiti, which is nice, except that he’s only using the announcement as a way of bashing the U.S. health care system.
He also conveniently omits the GIANT AMERICAN HOSPITAL SHIP sitting off the coast of Haiti.
He also skips over Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts, which could end up killing Obamacare.
I’m waiting with baited breath (as the cheese-eating cat said, sitting at the mousehole) for Moore to say something about the Massachusetts election. I’d expect him to let loose an “open letter” to the people of the Commonwealth, castigating them for not doing as Darth Michael commands, and promising his hordes’ unholy vengeance on them for rejecting Coakley, the Dolores Umbridge of New England, in favor of Barabbas---er, I mean, Brown.
I’ve been enjoying reading this site. I think it is valuable and will continue to read. But on this story, I must ask, is CNN considered an infallible source of information. I respect this site for asking questions and poking its nose where some do not believe it belongs. More power to ya. So, because CNN says it’s so, is that good enough, even when self-serving. Just asking with all due respect, as I had not even heard this story until today.
Update 3: Michael Moore applies for Michigan Tax Credit for his movie “Capitalsim: A Love Story” After publicly denouncing the program, while he sits on an advisory aboard that offers counsel to the people who award the tax credit.
Are there even five people who still take this man seriously?
I doubt even Moore would argue with that.
Edit: Actually, he might. I glanced at his page. At the top there’s a thing about Martin Luther King and Haiti in which he uses quotes to indirectly accuse the United States of being responsible for the destruction. Then he indirectly blames Bush for the speed of the U.S. response (because of the Iraq and Afghan wars. Nothing on there noting that Americans are down there pulling people out of the rubble.Nothing on there about American reporters forgetting that they’re reporters and just becoming people caught up in a horrendous situation. Nothing about Gupta.
He also disparages the efforts of former presidents Clinton and Bush, using the headline, “The Nation That Kills Together Goodwills Together.”
Almost as an afterthought, he provides links to OXFAM and other aid groups.
You would think that a person who fights for the little guy might be able to put his ridiculous leftist agenda aside for one minute and just try to help.
Everything he does lowers him farther and farther in my sight. I’m hoping that soon he’ll be so low that I’ll no longer be able to discover his whereabouts or his activities.
