Mkey’s Got A Brand New Film
Um, OK:
Inspired by Neil Young and Radiohead, Michael Moore will release his new film online and for free.
The film, “Slacker Uprising,” follows Moore’s 62-city tour during the 2004 election to rally young voters. It will be available for three weeks as a free download to North American residents, beginning Sept. 23. An official announcement of the film is planned for Friday.
Moore said he considered releasing “Slacker Uprising” theatrically as “Michael Moore’s big election year movie” as he did with 2004’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which was highly critical of President Bush.
Instead, Moore opted for a symbol of gratitude to his fans as he approaches the 20th anniversary of his first film, 1989’s “Roger & Me.”
“I thought it’d be a nice way to celebrate my 20th year of doing this,” Moore said. “And also help get out the vote for November. I’ve been thinking about what I want to do to help with the election this year.”
Wait. Wasn’t this “Captain Mike”? I’m confused. I guess you might as well release it for free since it’s likely that no one will pay to see it.
But this is what makes life beautiful:
The 97-minute long “Slacker Uprising” will be the first major film to be released in such a way. Last December, “Jackass 2.5” was streamed online and for free, but that was only a collection of left over material from “Jackass 2.” Companies like ClickStar, which Morgan Freeman co-founded, have made films still in theaters — such as 2006’s “10 Items or Less” — digitally available for purchase or rental.
Jackass 2.5. Slacker Uprising. If the symmetry were any more perfect, I suspect one of us would burst into tears.
The good thing about the film being free is that we can now watch it without having to give Michael a penny. Maybe we should have a Moorewatch festival complete with drinking game. To steal a line from P.J. O’Rourke, you just turn the movie on and boy, do you need a drink.
Comments
From what I understand, “Captain Mike” and “Slacker Uprising” are two separate films. Which means we have TWO self-aggrandizing love-letter-to-himself documentaries from Michael Moore to expect.
P.S. Only Michael Moore could release a film to chronicle an “uprising” of disinterested college students into voters which never materialized, for an election that is now four-years over, to charge them up for a candidate that lost, and still see this as some sort of victory.
Darkwing - Slacker Uprising and Captain Mike are in fact the same movie. The new movie is Fahrenheit 9/11 1/2 (or however the hell you spell it). He’s changed the title of Captain Mike three times now, but I’ve seen the brief footage Moore has released and Slacker Uprising is indeed the same film (with some serious editing I assume) as the movie that premiered at TIFF named Captain Mike.
Ah, so I see. Both Wikipedia and the IMDb had separate pages for both “Slacker Uprising” and “Captain Mike,” hence my confusion.
Maybe if he’s made enough changes to it since TIFF, it’s legally considered a separate movie. Like “Apocalypse Now” and “Apocalypse Now Redux.”
You know, isn’t this the second time the Mikey Machine has had to spin something Jackass did to “not count” so that it could be the first/best at something?
As I recall, they had to claim Jackass wasn’t a real documentary to keep it from taking away the “highest-grossing documentary of all time” title from… F9/11, wasn’t it?
You know, you’re right Rann! But it wasn’t for “Fahrenheit 9/11”, it was for “Bowling for Columbine,” which at the time (2002) had the highest gross for a documentary ($22 million U.S., $58 million worldwide).
And let’s not forget Indoctrinate U, a full length feature documentary no less that was released solely on the Internet not that long ago. Since it’s in Moore’s wheelhouse (so to speak) there’s no way he couldn’t have heard of it, so, once again, he’s not telling the truth. I wish I could just figure out why he does it.... :/
Did anyone see this the first time when it was called The Big One?
I wonder if Larry King, asked Michael Moore about his “Gustav being a Gift from God” statement. Will Michael Moore ever apologize for it?
