Manufacturing Dissent - Uncovering Michael Moore

Michael Moore, war profiteer

Posted by JimK on 03/20/06 at 08:43 PM

$21 million buys a lot of baseball hats and sweatpants, huh?

Fahrenheit 9/11, now an event, took in more than $228 million in ticket sales worldwide, a record for a documentary, and sold 3 million DVDs, which brought in another $30 million in royalties. After the theaters took their share of the movie’s gross (roughly 50 percent) and distributors deducted the marketing expenses (including prints, advertising, dubbing, and custom clearance) and took their own cut, the net receipts returned to Disney were $78 million.

Disney now had to pay Michael Moore’s profit participation. Under normal circumstances, documentaries rarely, if ever, make profits (especially if distributors charge the usual 33 percent fee). So, when Miramax made the deal for Fahrenheit 9/11, it allowed Moore a generous profit participation—which turned out to be 27 percent of the film’s net receipts. Disney, in honoring this deal, paid Moore a stunning $21 million. Moore never disclosed the amount of his profit participation. When asked about it, the proletarian Moore joked to reporters on a conference call, “I don’t read the contracts.”

What of Disney? After repaying itself $11 million for acquisition costs, it booked a $46 million net profit, which Eisner split between two subsidiaries, the Disney Foundation and Miramax. While it was far less than Disney made on children’s fare such as Finding Nemo, it was not a bad outcome. The Weinstein brothers also made a multimillion-dollar profit. They had a deal with Disney that contractually entitled them to a bonus of between 30 percent and 40 percent of the net profits on any film that they produced—in this case, that came out to about $8 million per brother. (The Weinsteins are now in the process of leaving Miramax.) But Michael Moore had perhaps the happiest ending of all. Not only had he made $21 million, he already had a sequel in preproduction—Fahrenheit 9/11 ½.

I defy anyone to find another person that made more money off the war in Iraq.  I mean an individual, not a company.  Moore made $21 mil for his pocket.  Name someone who made more than that.

flodrive-

Clinton couldn’t capture Mohammed Farah Aidid in Somalia.
He ended up looking weak, impotent, and stupid.
How the hell could he ever capture Bin Laden ?

He should’ve been more concerned with bring Bin Laden to his knees instead of Lewinsky to hers.

That is the best response you have? Still waiting for a plausible argument, why did Bush ignore the intelligence reports, The independent 9/11 commission found he was not doing his job. If you could just point to one precautionary measure, but you can’t. Bush was derelict in performing his job. You guys never address an argument.

But he only missed him by hours!!!

flodrive, just a reminder that JimK does have a life outside of Moorewatch like other people do here. And what is with the “If you support the war, then enlist Chickenhawk!” BS. That has been so overused here and in the forums.  It is also a well known fact that not everyone can join, due to age, injuries, and the fact they hold key jobs in the U.S, like in the medical field.

Clinton couldn’t capture Bin Laden when Sudan offered him up on a silver platter. How inept and irresponsible is that ? No Clinton was too busy bending over and kowtowing to the Chinese ...

Plase dont tell me you buy into Moores argument concerning the PDB?

Also, after Bin Laden bombed the US embassies, don’t you think Clinton should have been prepared for more attacks ?
Why was the Cole allowed to be bombed then ? Clinton had plenty of warnings too. He couldn’t do anything about it though could he ?

Everyone quickly flock to the side of flodrive the wise!  He knows all yet has not a shred of evidence!  Trust him, ‘cause he’s a “thinker”!

Right, all joking aside, if Mr. Fantastic wants answers to all his questions he can most likely look past his nose to the other parts of the site (there’s lots of them, stop being lazy) and find everything he needs to get his ass smeared up and down this place.  The good Moorewatchers need not waste breath repeating themselves.

As a sidenote, I’m not enlisting.  Not because I don’t support the troops or because I’m not eligible, but because I’m already on contract to commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.  I recently picked up an ABM slot, the only one in our detachment.  I’ll be heading to training in 2007, and until then I’m getting a college education.  Oh, did I mention I ALSO donate blood?

Ignore reality and make up your own. Google it if you can?
KARACHI: The Thursday on August 20, 1998 must have been the luckiest day in the life of Osama Bin Laden when at the last minute, he dropped the idea of visiting and having dinner at his Harkatul Jihad Al-Islami military training camp in Khost, Afghanistan. If Osama hadn’t postponed the last item in his schedule for Thursday, the American Tomahawk missiles would have gotten him and some other key commanders during their post dinner Kahwa (Arabic coffee) in the open skies of Khost, 94 miles
southeast of Kabul.

Clinton Let Bin Laden Slip Away and Metastasize - LA Times

President Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir, who wanted terrorism sanctions against Sudan lifted, offered the arrest and extradition of Bin Laden and detailed intelligence data about the global networks constructed by Egypt’s Islamic Jihad, Iran’s Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas.

Among those in the networks were the two hijackers who piloted commercial airliners into the World Trade Center.

The silence of the Clinton administration in responding to these offers was deafening.

Flodrive, I’m not enlisting because I already did six years in the Marine Corps, serving from 1990-1996. Does that count, or do I need to go back in and get an Al-Qaida scalp? Watch that “chickenhawk” stuff, because it’s rather juvenile. You’re passing judgment on people you don’t know, and that ends up making you look worse than the person you’re judging.

Posted by flodrive  on  03/23/2006  at  03:44 PM (Link to this comment | )

Congratulations, I hope Bush does not squander your valuable skills. My father spent 2 1/2 years in the Phillippine’s during WW2, My brother one tour of Vietnam, both of them decorated.  My lottery # was 356 I chose not to serve during Vietnam I figured the odds were against me. My son is a 15 year old honor roll student and I was going to steer him toward the Air Force. To date nobody has demonstrated what we lost there beside 50,000 Americans, now it is a tourist destination. It seems as if our leaders cannot do enough to accomodate China now, 30+ years ago they were the big menace, what changed? Last I heard they were still communist. How do you respond to military personnel whose views are contrary to yours, are they subject to vitriolic ridicule. I would be willing to give Bush accolades, but rewarding poor performance is inappropriate.

Posted by tboy  on  03/23/2006  at  03:52 PM (Link to this comment | )

but rewarding poor performance is inappropriate.

So Clinton screws up by missing Bin Laden and you reward him? Oh, ok that makes sense then?!?!?

Posted by flodrive  on  03/23/2006  at  04:01 PM (Link to this comment | )

You served and get my utmost respect. You have got to admit there are a lot of eligible people that are supporting the war but rationalizing their own deferment. Why the low recruitment numbers? If I were of age and supported the effort I would have to go. I will admit the term chickenhawk is rhetorical but it is definitive. The Moore bashers do not address arguments. Moore is not my idol, he debunks alot of what we are getting from Washington and people hate him for it. I just stumbled across this site and wasted my time off work.

How the hell does this keep happening?  Time and time again I read posts by moonbats and convince myself that they must have been written by smarmy mouthed little shits in junior high; then it turns out that the authors is an adult and in some cases even managed to reproduce.  How our friend here managed to do so and still have time to donate all that blood is just going to have to remain a mystery.  Now get back to work. Those groceries aren’t going to bag themselves.

I know its a trap and i know its useless, but this statement just exposed your helplessness.  Moore’s ‘debunking’ has been debunked itself.  There is a reason we use the word Moore-on.  It’s people like you who cannot take the time to see Moores lies and mistruths.  Just becuase he claims to be a dissenting view against congress does not mean you should put all faith into him.

Not to get OT but flodrive is sounding alot like Charlies Sheen recently (when he claimed that the planes hitting the towers werent commercial airliners and that the buildings seemed to colapse in a controlled demolition-- completely whacked out ideas and conspiracy theories with no factual support or substance)

A newly released pre-war Iraqi document indicates that an official representative of Saddam Hussein’s government met with Osama bin Laden in Sudan on February 19, 1995 after approval by Saddam Hussein.

What the hell does that mean?  I didn’t know furnace was a verb.  Did you mean to ask me if I need a furnace installed?  My head is quite comfortably warm, thanks.  My well spoken what?  From now on you should probably have your honor roll son edit your posts for you.  Or you could send them to me.  Just be sure to attach a note letting me know what you are trying to say.

Flodrive -

I suggest reading “China- the Gathering Menace” by Constantine Menges. He’s pretty hard on your boy Clinton for bending over backwards for China and looking the other way at their transgressions.

Bush is getting about the same kind of pass that Clinton received for the first WTC bombing, the embassy bombings, and the Cole bombings.

What Bush isn’t getting is the media support that Clinton got for the Balkans, Haiti, Somalia etc. FACT: Clinton dispatched the military overseas 44 times during his eight years. The US military had been deployed outside of the US only 8 times in the previous 45 years. -from the Politically Incorrect Guide to American History by Thomas Woods; pg 239.

Where was all the outrage from our fair and balanced media or from those foreign policy experts, a.k.a Hollyood ?

Posted by Vermin  on  03/23/2006  at  04:43 PM (Link to this comment | )

Clinton dispatched the military overseas 44 times during his eight years.

He also did everything in his power to destroy the ability of the military to function and therefore bears a share of the responsibility for what is happening in Iraq.

Not to mention the gutting of our human intelligence resources. He mistakenly felt that satellites could monitor everything.

Posted by Xetrov  on  03/23/2006  at  05:11 PM (Link to this comment | )

Flo, were you born stupid, or did you just learn stupidity from watching Moore and hanging out with his followers?

Clinton was gunning for Bin Laden and missed him by hours,

Osama offered to Clinton several times (Link)

President Clinton and his national security team ignored several opportunities to capture Osama bin Laden and his terrorist associatesquote]

They had a bead on Osama at a wedding he attended in the UAE, but they did not want to risk killing any of the royal family.

It was a hunting party (link).

In February 1999, President Clinton used the presence of some UAE princes in Osama bin-Laden’s hunting party as an excuse not to fire cruise missiles.

What the hell was Bush doing for 8 months beside ignoring intelligence reports and his job.

What the hell was Clinton doing for 8 years besides ignoring intelligence reports and his job? (see, when you start a sentence with ‘What’ it actually becomes a question and requires a question mark at the end, this thing - ?)

Yes he is.

You have to understand the mindset of people like him.
He’s just lurking in the shadows watching, while licking his wounds.
Note the convenient timing of his retreat… just as everyone with half a brain was hurling facts and documentation at him, proving how insipidly ignorant his points were.

I’m outta here enjoy your surreal universe.

Make a note; this is the natural retreat call of the wounded, Yellow-Bellied North American Moonbat.

So do I still get credit for making fun of him?

Posted by DrEngine  on  03/24/2006  at  12:12 AM (Link to this comment | )

Isn’t this a bit silly?  That’s like saying MM ought to support violent rampages because it was the centerpiece of Bowling for Columbine.  The point of this post was what?  To prove that MM shouldn’t protest the war because his movie that criticizes it has made him rich?  That’s soft-headed, and a lot of these threads are thought-provoking.  JimK’s posts are usually so well thought out.  I don’t get this one.

Posted by Rann Aridorn  on  03/24/2006  at  02:17 AM (Link to this comment | )

This is not a difficult concept to grasp, DrEngine.
Moore decries war profiteers such as, by his estimation, Halliburton, Cheney, and to some extent Bush.
Moore is, himself, a war profiteer.

Posted by DrEngine  on  03/24/2006  at  02:40 AM (Link to this comment | )

That’s a stretch Rann.  A war profiteer is in the Cheney mold because someone like Cheney could conceivably start a war and profit from it.  MM had nothing to do with the foreign policies that precipitated our invasion of Iraq.  You could argue with the concept that Bush and Cheney started the war simply to cash in (that’s up for debate) but MM is a war profiteer?  Come on.  You’re reaching.

Posted by Buzzion  on  03/24/2006  at  08:39 AM (Link to this comment | )

And you dr. engine have a problem with definitions.  A war profiteer is not required to have a hand in foreign policies that lead up to a war.  Gun runners are war profiteers because they sell guns to those involved in the conflict with the goal of earning money.  Michael Moore used the war in Iraq to pocket $21 million.  That makes him a war profiteer.  You’re not allowed to alter the definition so your idol doesn’t fall into it.

Posted by up4debate  on  03/24/2006  at  09:22 AM (Link to this comment | )

Michael Moore used the war in Iraq to pocket $21 million.

Like the good dr said, thats a bit of a stretch.

Posted by Belcatar  on  03/24/2006  at  09:36 AM (Link to this comment | )

All right, Up4Debate...I’ll spot you the Iraq war profiteer thing, but in exchange, will you concede that Michael Moore profits on the suffering of other people? He did it with Roger and Me, (the people of Flint) He did it with Bowling for Columbine (the famous school shooting) and he did it with F9/11. (The WTC disaster, and the Iraq war)

He earned 21 million dollars by taking other people’s suffering and twisting the facts to create an oversimplified “storyline” that the average American Idol fan could swallow as truth. The funny thing is that French people probably don’t watch American Idol, but they swallowed his cinematic feces as well.

If it was merely war profiteering, that’s pretty bad on its own. But this turd with skin has established a lucrative career out of making up stories from human suffering.

Posted by Belcatar  on  03/24/2006  at  09:42 AM (Link to this comment | )

Even during the elections, when the country was suffering terribly from the constant presence of morons (not the usual, entertaining morons, the ones running for office) Michael Moore cashed in by touring the country and supporting one Moron over the other, when the fact was, they were both morons who probably reached their Peter Principle level before they were sophmores in high school.

I think Moore deserves to be deported to someplace like France, where he can make a documentary about how the French system is so much better than the American one, and how it’s really Bush’s fault that young french people want guaranteed jobs.

Posted by up4debate  on  03/24/2006  at  09:46 AM (Link to this comment | )

All right, Up4Debate...I’ll spot you the Iraq war profiteer thing, but in exchange, will you concede that Michael Moore profits on the suffering of other people?

Well, that certainly is a more valid argument than war profiteer.  It is one way to look at it.  Of course, the same could be said for Anderson Cooper, Bill O’Reilly, Steven Speilberg, to name a few off the top of my head.
